mrAru and I have decided that we have adopted our final cat. She is now 3 years old. The reason is he is 56 and I am 60, I have had 2 different forms of cancer dealt with in the last 5 years, he is a colorectal cancer high risk person [5 family members between both sides had died of it.] So we have perhaps 20 years of lifespan left, and for some verkempt reason the cants in our families live into their 20s. We do not want to leave a mourning pet behind us. It will be bad enough if we have to give her up to go into managed care [we hope to have a custom built house with a bedroom to move a caregiver into for the time we have at the end.]
Ahem.
You know the rules.

That’s sad. You can adopt older cats …
That, or I’ve known older folks who co-own a pet along with a friend/relative.
I have a friend who, as she is aging, has started taking in hospice cases to give a home to for whatever time they have left. That would be hard, and not for me, but very gratifying.

I think other people have already listed most of my solutions.
I’ll add that if you know of a good home for the cat(s) to go to with people who have agreed to take them in, and have this arrangement clearly set up, that gives you the option to continue getting even younger cats. Ideally, try to have the people get to visit the cats, so they’ll be familiar.
I think that should be furshlugginer. You are verklempt, and I don’t blame you!
I’m not in your same position yet, but I think all the time about paring back the animal ownership. If any of mine go, I’m not going to rush to replace them.
I’m 76, and the next cat I adopt will be an older one. There are so many older cats in shelters, and they just stay there because so few people want them. I’ve adopted a few in the past, and have been extraordinarily lucky with them.
I haven’t think a idea like this or seen this but its fantastic , best option if you want to keep a pet but don’t have all time to care them, I also hope better mr.and mrs aru for their health may god give them remaining good life
I’m going to be 70 later this year, and have two feline overlords who are going to be 14 next month. As I’ve mentioned elsewhere one of them was recently diagnosed as diabetic but has been resisting being given his insulin, so I’m not sure how much longer he’ll be around. While I’d love to re-experience the joys of having a kitten I’m also aware that it might be better to adopt an older cat.
