My first emergency repair in the new house; a handy MMP

Taters, I’m so sorry to hear it. Best wishes and prayers for you and your family, and we’ll listen to you vent from here till Judgment Day. Keep us posted, 'kay?

I know it’s treatable and beatable. My mother in law underwent a masectomy in the 70s and has been cancer free ever since. An aquaintance of mine, who is only 35, had a lump removed, underwent chemo and radiation (last year), and is currently cancer free.

So, it’s all a matter of convincing my mother. She does understand all of this. However, she is worried about payments, insurance, etc. She just underwent surgery in May and only returned to work a couple of weeks ago. She is afraid of losing her job, etc. God, I wish I was Warren Buffet rich so she didn’t have to worry about all this.

Dang, Taters, I’m so sorry! Best to your mom and you and the whole fambly. And a pox upon the bonehead doctor.

{{{{{Taters and TMom}}}}}

You guys are so awesome…thanks so much for the well-wishes.

Taters, I’m so sorry.

VWife’s great aunt had a radical mastectomy a long time ago, and when she had the implant done for the recostruction she went up a couple of cup sizes on both sides. Said it was one of the bet things she ever did for herself…

Taters I’m so sorry to hear about your mom. She and you (cause you’ll need it too) are in my thoughts and prayers. I’ve had two good friends be diagnosed with breast cancer and both came through just fine. She will too. Still, that damn doctor needs to be taken out into a dark alley and beaten. We’ll arrange that if’n ya want. Please keep us updated and you come on in here and rant and rave anytime you need to, you hear? Let mom know she’s got a lot of cool kids mojo behind her. Ok, maybe not, in case a bunch of strangers (we’ve met though so I’m not a stranger, just strange  ) from an internet message board would creep her out.

Howdy ems! Good to hear from ya! We’ve missed you.

The grilled ham and cheese sammich and chips hit the spot. I’ve got two whole chickens plus some chicken boobs thawing cause I’m gonna make some chicken salad either tomorrow or Friday evening. I want some chicken salad and I make a good one. I’ve got some wunnerful garden grown maters, so, I think possibly lunch on Saturday will be chicken salad stuffed maters. Oh, and there will be juicy, drippy mater sammiches. Nuttin’ better than a mater sammich with lots of mayo, salt and pepper. The kind you have to stand over the kitchen sink to eat cause they’re all juicy and drippy. YUM!!! OOH! I’m gettin’ some home grown okra this weekend too. I get to freeze some and have some to make the best dang fried okra ever. That’s okra with a little green tomato, onion and banana pepper all chopped up, battered in a little flour, salt and pepper and lightly fried in just enough peanut oil to cover the bottom of a skillet. :: drool :: OOH!!! And I’m gettin’ some green beans, butter beans, creme peas, crowder peas, summer squash and corn. Lots of all of it! I’ll be snappin’, shellin, shuckin’ and slicin’ away over the next few weeks. I’ll have all these veggies to put in my freezer and eat this winter. I’m excited! Did I mention I’m kinda strange?

Taters - so sorry to hear about your mom’s diagnosis. This is a really scary time for her, I’m sure. There’s lots of support groups and services out there, though. I would suggest calling the American Cancer Society for guidance. Not only can they provide support and information, but your local office may be able to help with logistics, and it soulnds like that’s what she’s focusing her fear on. Some offices can provide rides to treatments, they can talk you through the legal & insurance stuff, that kind of thing. When my uncle was sick, they even reimbursed my mother (his caregiver) the cost of transportation to his treatments & appointments (gas & tolls). Just know you’re not alone, and neither is she. We’ll all keep you in our thoughts and prayers.

My best wishes to your Mom, Taters. You have my permission to give Mom’s doc a good swift kick when you see him. And if that doesn’t do it, sue 'im!
One of my co-workers at my previous place of [del]abject servitude[/del] employment had a double radical done, and they made new, perky boobs for her, with tatooed on nipples and everything. Unfortunately she wouldn’t let us inspect them, for scientific purposes, you unnerstand.
Anyway, we’re pulling for your Mom, and you too.

Swampy, I like the mater sammiches with the bacon and lettuce on 'em the best, myself, but garden-fresh maters are some good eatin too. It’s a good thing I don’t live closer to you.

Oh no. :frowning: :frowning: :frowning: I’m so sorry Taters. All my hopes for your mother as she fights this. {{{hugs}}}

So that’s where they got that character from.

Bumba I didn’t grow the maters. The maters are gifts. Plus, there are a metric buttload of produce stands round these parts chock full of homegrown veggies this time of year. Ok, acutally all year round. A little later on, I’ll be gettin’ greens and such. Oh and I have a source from home grown taters (N.O.T., this just does not get old!) too.

Taters, I’m sorry to hear about your mom’s diagnosis, and am hereby volunteering to be on the “kick the doctor’s ass” squad. Once this is sorted out and she is well, see a lawyer. That very well may resolve any financial worries she had.

Healing thoughts are headed her way, and thoughts of strength for you. I know it is hard to be strong for someone you love when you’re scared to death inside, but I also know you can do it. We are all here when you need to vent.

Speaking of venting, my Siamese cat, Valentino has developed the annoying habit of sitting on my desk and STARING at me. With occasional yowls added. He is driving me insane, and it is not a long trip at this point. I have spent the last week chopping and hacking nandinas out of my back yard, which is so overgrown it is unbelievable. I have murdered some azaleas just to get the nandinas out of them. “Heavenly bamboo”, my ass!

We now return you to your regularly scheduled juvenility…

<snerk> away…

I think I was insulted by the last one… :dubious:

Thank you kindly. Come on over & I’ll take you to my hairdresser. She’s a magician.

FCM - your baby sure travels fast! Glad to hear she’s safe & having fun. But I admit I’m jealous, too!

I don’t like the TENS stuff (kinda freaky, I think), and I have no idea what you guys are talking about with that spreadsheet nonsense, so I guess I have nothing more to add! Except I like fresh tomatoes (you say maters, I say to-mah-toes). And chicken salad stuffed ones sound especially good. Swampy, what makes your chicken salad so good? Any secret ingredients? C’mon…talk!

Swampy…you wouldn’t happen to be traveling this way during 'mater season, would you? I can offer a pair of Snakes tickets as a bribe…

So sorry to hear your mom’s news, Taters. Count me in the “sending lots of hugs and prayers” AND “whap the doc one upside the head” club.

Ellen, hope you and baby are feeling lots better soon…SO THAT YOU CAN POST THAT YUMMY-SOUNDING brownie and cream cheese and fruit recipe!! (OK, I’m hoping you’re feeling better regardless…)

<snerk>in bed<snerk>

<snerk>in bed<snerk>

There was more…something about how I actually interpreted the second fortune positively…really, there was a way to do it…but now I’ve forgotten again. Cuz I’m tired and need to crawl into bed.

G’night…

GT

What does it mean “mater”?

It’s been an insane day, and so after doing a quick skim, here’s what I have to share:

First, thanks for all the thoughts, prayers, and all around comments for the #1 daught and sil. More information as I receive it.

My mom failed to tell me she was having a liver biopsy on Monday until after the fact. Again, thoughts, prayers, etc. It never rains but it pours, ya know? kaiwik is a little stressed.

mika I received your email, thank you, look for a reply tomorrow.

Taters We are praying for you, your mom, and family. We just went through a cancer ordeal with my dad, who failed himself to have the prostate check for two or three years. He’s had the surgery and the radiation, and is doing quite well. Cancer is such a frightening word, but breast cancer is very treatable (as so many have already said.) Take deep breaths, give that doctor “what for”*, and know that you have so many here who care.

bobbio you may not share that nickname with my husband, or I shall be forever known as Always. (Well, I can’t help it if I am!)

Yes, Cherry mom and babe, feel better. I remember those days very well, poor things. On the other hand, I see that I am not the only one coveting that recipe!

swampy good Lord but you are a produce tease. Do you realize that 99% of our produce is freighted in, and is generally tasteless? sigh Skiffman and the chillun had never ever tasted a real tomato until I grew a cherry tomato plant in the living room one year. The looks on their faces were priceless. After that, I never got another tomato off the plant, somehow they disappeared just as they ripened. I want a greenhouse, it’s really the only way to grow maters here, and I need them! Also, I have never seen an okra plant face to face, but the seed catalogs show they have such pretty blooms for a veggie. I have never eaten fresh okra, either. Oh, and bobbio, I have never seen cotton growing either. I am so deprived…

I spent the day shampooing the carpet, still have the living room to do tomorrow. Also, the shelter lady is bringing a little pom she wants to home over to me to temper test him tomorrow. Considering the huge fight we had several years ago, which she eventually apologised profusely for, this makes me feel validated. Poms are my breed, and I have spent a lot of time researching the breed, so this is a very good thing!

I’m going to bed, tomorrow will be busy, and we get the kittens this weekend. More to come regarding the kitties, pics too!

*First I need to explain that I have two dads, my step dad who has been my dad forever, and my bio-dad, who I am now getting to know after many years. When we were kids, my bio-dad used to say that one ought to give kids “what for” every night, because if one didn’t know “what for” the kids did. He was big on corporal punishment back then. That doctor needs a whack with a 2x4.

“You’ve been here before, but things are about to change. I know it. I feel it. There’s a storm on the way.” – Stephen King

I have seen cotton growing, so neener neener! My brother went to college at Texas Tech in Lubbock, so we often saw cotton growing when we went to visit.

Taters, sorry to hear about your mom. Good thoughts and I hope she’ll get the treatment she needs to beat the disease.

An update: The dean’s secretary (who has more power than God) talked to Financial Aid, and the misunderstanding is cleared up. This does not guarantee that I’ll get a refund, but at least they’re not waiting on some cockamamie list when the information they need is right there.
