My first emergency repair in the new house; a handy MMP

It’s not bad, it’s just definitely not what I wanted, and that makes me cranky. But not nearly as cranky as I’d be if I didn’t drink it.

:frowning: I’m away that weekend! I was hoping to see you there.

I went to my SIL’s last night. I was really late, because I had a hair appointment (new color& highlights) that took way longer than I expected. But my hair looks fabulous! I had forgotten that it was SIL’s birthday this week, so that was embarrassing, since everyone else bought pretty wrapped gifts and I bought wine. (I remembered the birthday as I was about to head up to her house, and stopped for a nice bottle, but it wasn’t wrapped pretty.) SIL is very gracious, though, so she was able to make me feel comfortable with both being over an hour late & not having a gift.

Blueberry coffee sounds disgusting. Who’s idea was that? Hazelnut, OK, but blueberry? Ick. And I don’t even drink coffee!

kai add me to the list of those sending prayers & good thoughts out for your family.

And I think scratching your own butt is a noble goal, FCM. Unless Mr Bus Guy is willing to send his wife over to handle it for you!

rigs - I hope your today goes better than your yesterday did!

I’m sure I’ll make more than one trip–I’ll keep you posted. Opening weekend is the 5th, which I could also do, if that’s better for everybody.

I can’t do the 5th - going to the Bronx Zoo that day.

Well, never mind that then. Sorry, Twinkie! :frowning:

I went to my first belly dancing class last night, and man, that’s tough! I’m not as sore as I thought I’d be, but I do feel it in my tummy and shoulders/arms this morning. It was fun though and I think will be a good class. I’m excited to learn more. And to get one of those wrap things with bells on it!

Stop talking about Dunkin Donuts! There aren’t any out here and I miss them! :frowning: Not for the blueberry coffee, obviously (although I have had blueberry tea which is good), just in general. But I’ll be going home for a wedding the first weekend in August and I’ll make lots of DD stops to make up for the lack. Panera bagels just don’t compare.

I swear that’s part of my job description. Yesterday I got a call from a woman who wanted to know how to use Google to search for a manufacturer who provided a piece of equipment that I never heard of. And she didn’t know the name f the equipment nor the manufacturer.

kwaiToo bad you’re not on this side of the country. We’ve got two really good medical centers for reproductive stuff. The GF and I are currently checking out both of them so that we can have one of our own. Pass on my best wishes for them.

Golfing today. It’s going to be almost 100F out in the sun. Good think I brought a lot of sunblock for my pale Irish ass. Have a good one today, folks. And if I don’t get back to the MMP this week (because I can’t imagine the workload I’m going to have waiting after taking a half-day away from my desk) have a good weekend. And I’ll see you Sunday, VBob. I’ll bring my work gloves, long pants, work boots, and a chain saw (just in case some of the stuff needs chopped into tiny little bits.)

Today has been declared watermelon day at work. Ok, I declared it to be, but still, it’s official now.

Why watermelon day you ask? Because the produce guy up the street has some really nice watermelons. So, watermelons were bought and chilled. Watermelon eating festivities are commencing as I post. Why aren’t you there then, you ask? Because I just ate a little piece and I’m good right now. I like ice cold watermelon but a little bit goes a long way cause it’s so sweet. I do, however, hear the happy sounds of watermelon munching in the break room.

I’m thinking next week one day we will celebrate ice cream day. Also, Friday next week is the annual staff pool party at the swampcave. It will be a festive week.

Someone phoned a couple of months ago to ask whether Winnie the Pooh was a boy or a girl.

There was a moment of awkward silence while I wondered why she was calling, and then I said, “Boy. He’s called Edward Bear in the poetry, and referred to as ‘him’.”. She was lucky to get an A. A. Milne aficionado.

It’s raining today. I’m supposed to go downtown. Wandering won’t be quite as fun.

Any sf or fantasy readers please proceed to my thread in Cafe Society.

Oh, isn’t this a pretty cover? It’s for one of my favourite YA fantasy novels.

taxi, I’m glad you had fun, and you definitely need sparkly noisemaking hip scarves. Bellydance gear is the coolest.

**Drae ** - I’ll pencil 8/12 in, but I’d be more inclined to go in September when it’s not quite so humid - I’ll look into scooter rentals

**LiLi ** - why are you getting questions about ficticious characters? are you a librarian?

**swampy ** - I just loves me a sweet juicy wahtahmelin. Think I go hunt some down at lunch.

Blueberry coffee sounds disgusting. Actually, I cannot stand any flavored coffees, so I guess I’m just a crotchety old lady. They smell good, but they don’t taste the way they smell. They taste weird and the coffee part of the taste is kinda burnt. Give me just plain ol’ coffee. Well, actually not plain ol’ coffee, Community New Orleans Blend™ Coffee (coffee w/chicory), to be specific. Thank heaven for the internet; we left Louisiana but we don’t have to find a replacement for our new mostest favoritest coffee in the entire universe.

The other good thing I took away from Louisiana, besides a love for Community New Orleans Blend™ Coffee, is a vastly increased tolerance for humidity. I remember the last time I lived in Maryland suffering in the humidity along with everyone else; now, though, Maryland humidity at its worst feels like a fairly mild New Orleans day with relatively low humidity. It’s all in the perspective, ain’t it?

kaiwik, good thoughts going out to kaidaughter that she’ll be able to be a mama. And with you as her mama, I’m sure she’ll be a most excellent mama.

taxi78cab, my MIL went belly dancing for exercise for years. And even at the age of 80, she’s still active and limber and goes (country) dancing every weekend. So she’s clearly proof that belly dancing is good for you.

FCM, those zapper thingys Physical Torturers have are wonderful, aren’t they? They’re so wonderful, and I have such a great excuse with some chronic back pain problems, that last year when my out-of-pocket for our insurance was all used up so anything medical was 100% free for the last two months of the year, my doctor’s office got my my very own TENS unit. It’s about the size of a cigarette pack but it delivers the exact same zapping as the big units at the PT office. I love, love, love my TENS! I can use it for as long as I want to, too – all day long if I feel like it. And the TENS is only my second favorite medical appliance – I also have this fancy bionic knee brace thingy that is gradually returning my nearly-useless knee to functionality again. I love my collection of medical appliances! And I love my insurance company for paying for my medical appliances! And I love Papa T.'s company for offering a truly fabulous insurance plan!

Ahem. Sorry. I’m just HAPPY today because I am doing NO work. I am strictly goofing off today and tomorrow. Goofing off is one of life’s best pleasures, isn’t it?

shame on me - I forgot to send positive vibes to kwaidaughter. Not to open any wounds, have they discussed adoption?

May I suggest shorts? My goals do not include deforestation of the jungle this weekend, but do cover general throwing out of crap (I have a trailer to load it into), moving tools out of the house, and things like putting up trim and wainscoting.

I will give you a grand tour, however. Who knows, we may find a bear (N. O. S.), or even the elusive Dismal Swamp Bigfoot back there.

Noooo, you can’t do the 5th or the 12th! I won’t be back home yet!! Darnit. And then there’s the trip to Cape Cod. How about September 1?

Mika, you’re going to be in NYC or its vicinity? For how long?

Glad the belly dancing went well, taxi. KeithT will, I’m sure, be very taken with your new skill.

Twinkie, do we get pics of your fabulous new hair?

FCM - I’ve been reading about your new PT adventures. I’m glad the forward range of motion is coming along nicely. Hopefully that’ll make the backwards motion easier when it comes time for that?

And of course, best wishes to kaiwik’s daughter and her husband.

Okay, pun time.

This pun, I must confess, has an ulterior motive. You see, the comparison between the two quotes is not a coincidence. They’re really saying the same thing. I’ve been rereading Language in Thought and Action, which I originally read as part of a philosophy course in high school. But it’s not a philosophy book: it’s a linguistics text. It’s all about how what distinguishes humanity is the world of the symbolic. We live, essentially, inside our minds. What we see is not what is actually there, it’s a concept that we have learned to pair with a specific stimulus. Only, those concepts - which we call words - never say all about what is actually there. And the word, referring to a category of stimuli, only conveys what is similar between its specific instances (Chair[sub]1[/sub] is not Chair[sub]2[/sub], etc.). There is no way out of this symbolic world, nor would we want one. It is what makes us human, it is what allowed the humans to survive in a world full of animals stronger and faster than we are, and an environment that can kill us by blinking. It is what allows man’s reach to exceed his grasp.

I want some watermelon.

I’d be more inclined as well, but the calendar informs me that I’ve only got the weekend of the 9th free. How does everybody feel about that?

If I don’t have a show - I’m good.

Eh? When did I say that?

September 9th works for me, Drae.

Hey, mika. You close to Albany? Because the trainer working with us here (and to whom, I SHOULD be paying attention) is from there.

She’s with these folks.

Good morning all.

Sending best wishes to kaidaughter in hopes that things go well.

I’d appreciate some good thoughts from y’all. My mother had a special sort of biopsy done on one of her breasts last week and last night they called her and asked her to come in today so they could “discuss” the results. They wouldn’t tell her anything over the phone. She is wigging out. Her appointment is for 10:30 this morning.

Drae, I’ve had blueberry coffee before. I thought it was terrible. But, given the choice between NO coffee and SOME coffee, I guess I’d drink if I had to.

taxi, I’m sure the belly dancing class will be quite fun. Maybe I should take it up. The moves must strengthen your abdominal muscles like nobody’s business.

I better do some work now.
