My first week as a temp

Well, I’m a little ahead of myself since it’s only Thursday, but so far so good. I’m working as a front desk/administrative assistant down at the Pharmacy school. And it’s very peaceful, actually. Except for a few brief occasions when I had to step out to haul large boxes of paper, I’ve been sitting behind my desk, folding Christmas cards and surfing the Internet. Stress levels are virtually nil, even if I’m making less money than I was. If I could sneak in an afternoon nap, things would be near-perfect. But it’ll do.

Good on you, and congrats. But – won’t that job get a little boring after a while?

Yeah…I hate a job that’s THAT stress-free. I always figure everyone else is saying, “Look at the slacker at the front desk.”

I spent a year or so temping out of college. It was almost always stress free. Any level of competence and hard work was appreciated. And I don’t think I had more than three days off I didn’t want to take off. Not a bad gig - didn’t pay great, but wasn’t bad either - some of the admin jobs I was offered paid less than I was making temping, so it was competitive.

Well, yes, it is boring, and that’s part of the fun. This is the first job I’ve had where I could look at the Dope during the day. Because there is ABSOLUTELY nothing going on. I might read my book this afternoon.

Here’s a tip to disguise your surfing when people come by:
What I used to do when my computer screen was visible to the public was to create a desktop wallpaper that looked like a spreadsheet.
If you don’t know how to make your own, there’s plenty of samples on the web http://images.google.com/images?q=spreadsheet&svnum=100&hl=en&lr=&safe=off&sa=G&imgsz=xxlarge

And to make your browser disappear in a hurry, just type “Windows key” with “d” at the same time and the desktop appears.

You don’t need to make it that complicated - just keep a document or spreadsheet open at all times, and Alt Tab toggles the active screen. I may have temped for a while.

Other then the lack of paid holidays/vacations, and no insurance, temping can be pretty nice. I did it for most of a year about around 1992. I was getting about $13/hr and all the work I wanted.

What amazed me is what jobs people would hire temps for. I worked for Motorola for a while, opening their accounts receivable mail. Yep, I got to handle incoming personal checks. Dangerosa has it right about hard work being appreciated. I had a sales manager write me a couple hundred dollar check, because I’d shown them how to do some data downloads in 30 minutes a week, rather then 15hrs+. I actually got 2 job offers out of that year of temping.
