Annoyed has inadvertently done us a favor by neatly illustrating a fundamental difference between the majority of people on the right and left. Namely: for some unfathomable reason, the right wing takes childish delight in irritating people on the left. It’s obviously a deliberate strategy done for no other reason than to enjoy the distress of others.

As for me - and the evidence suggests that most progressive types are of a similar bent - I really don’t have the least bit of desire to enrage people on the right sheerly for the joy of seeing their blood pressure rise. Sure, if their irritation is a side-effect of a policy I favor being implemented, or of incontrovertible evidence coming to light proving them wrong, I’m okay with it. But for me the point is the policy or the evidence, not the other person’s anger.

I realize self-introspection is largely lacking on both sides of the aisle these days, but if anyone cares to think about it, you might ask yourself whether you take visible delight in riling up the opposition. And if you do, do you think it makes you a better person? Or do you think that people who care more about the issues than about making somone mad for the sadistic pleasure of seeing them suffer might, just might, be the ones with a stronger moral compass?
