The problem with that is that it’s much easier to catch someone in the act than after the fact. I’d hate the castle doctrine if there were supertasers, like phasers with a stun setting. It’s not that I want criminals hurt or killed, it’s that I want them stopped. It’s like how I don’t want to kill vermin, either. If there were something like roach hotels or humane traps for criminals, I’d love it.
I don’t particularly care about my stuff, but if some burglar came into the house where my children were… well, I can definitely see stabbing them with a screwdriver or worse. Don’t threaten mama bear’s cubs, yo.
I care quite a bit about my stuff. I work hard for it and take care of it. I would defend my stuff fairly strongly and have no qualms about it. If my children/loved ones were in danger I would stop at no ends to protect them. I have little regard for those who choose to threaten someone elses home and family. Glad your people and their belongings are safe Mint!
But again, Mama Bear shouldn’t chase them out into the street and then try to whack them. ![]()
Quoted for truth.
Seriously everything got worse when your friends chased the bad guys.
Say what?
Vigilante justice was bad even in 1960’s Westerns on TV. ![]()
I don’t know about sinister… it sounds like they just wanted that car and were after the keys to it when they snatched the purse. I’d be interested to know what kind of car it was.
I take it that you consider “heat of the moment” to be an invalid defense?
Sucks that they went through that.
I think Dave is awesome, FWIW.
How’s that? Sounds like the good guys are safe and at least one of the bad guys is temporarily out of comission. Seems like a decent outcome to me.
Legalize drugs for starters?
I concur.. I’ve been trained for that.. and even people who have sometimes freeze up.. Its purely instinct..
Glad everyone that matters is okay.
I agree that it would be difficult to return after this incident. It’d be hard to feel safe again after a home invasion. Plus, I’d worry that the robber’s friends would want to pay me back for thwarting the robbery and stabbing their friend 8 times.
What a nightmare.
That’s why we have juries.
There is a difference from the guy in Texas beating his daughter’s rapist to death by his barn on his property, and chasing a burglar out of the house and trying to kill him.
I’d probably want to kill the burglar, too.
The courts. The courts! In Mexico! I think you meant to post this in the “absurdist joke” thread.
Okay, I’m exaggerating. They do have a justice system, and sometimes it works fine. More often, the problem is the police…although there might be some extra effort made in a place like Tulum, so dependent on foreign tourist bucks.
I guess the question is, “Would Dave have been so aggressive with the screwdriver were this to have occurred in a country where he had more confidence in the police and/or courts?”
I doubt that was on his mind, except in the sense that he made a quick calculation about the likelihood of police arriving to that “remote” location in time to help.
So they live in a mansion, with all the windows open, and valuables like purses lying around, in a quasi third world country? Why not take your latest high tech gadget and go shoot some film in Somalia? Or wear your tiara on the subway? It’s not easy to have sympathy for the plight of such victims, sometimes.
Then stab a robber? They are lucky they aren’t in a place that would throw them in jail for that, in my opinion.
Good point. ![]()
There goes the “Heat of the Moment” defense, though.
Oh, Mint, you missed a golden opportunity. The screwdriver-wielding hubby should have been christened Phillip.
mmm
What was the drop in home invasion rates?
The two good guys chased a portion of the bad guys away and while they were putting him out of commission the other two beat up one of the women. Had they been slightly braver or had there been 6 instead of 4 this could have turned out completely differently.
First rule of survival is don’t split up the party. Seriously. It’s not about the right to defend your home or possessions it’s about defending your home and family.
