My friend the artist wants to go online with his art

Well, here’s the deal.

I have a friend around here in Mississippi, who is a very talented artist. He does sculpture, but mainly paintings, and is just generally very talented. He has BFA and such, and his stuff is really good. Now, being in Mississippi, he has some problems selling his more modern stuff. Sure he can sell landscapes all day, but seriously he needs to find a much better audience for his work. I offered to help him make a webpage, but I was wondering if you guys could help.

I was thinking if there were some internet message boards filled with possible patrons, he could plug his website to no end, and I am sure he could get a few sales that way.

But I do okay making websites, and I would LOVE to help this guy. What can I do? Obviously the webpage is a good idea, but how can I pimp it properly? I have seen a few past threads that mentioned some good art sites, but I really want to help this guy get some of his stuff the recognition that it deserves. The folks around here are just a little too conservative in their tastes to appreciate it.

I’m not sure what advice to give you except perhaps contacting on- and off-line press and getting them to do stories on people who buy art online, with your friend as the main focus. Put the address up when it goes online, though. I have recently been seeking out artists selling their work online, and haven’t found much that I like. Screen prints tend to translate a lot better onto computer screens. Make sure the sizes are clearly stated, as I’ve fallen in love with a piece or two, found the price reasonable, then realized the sculpture/painting was less than 5 inches tall.
