HATE HATE HATE!
In fact, almost everything Abel Ferrara has ever directed has been a steaming pile of pretentious monkey dung.
Why do people think this movie is art, not exploitation?

I’ve got a funny story about that movie. It came to the Inwood Theater, an art house type of place in Dallas, when I was still living there. There was this old woman a few rows in front of me, who was obviously used to seeing Merchant-Ivory types of movies play there.
Anyway, after the scene where Keitel pulls over the two girls and masturbates, she gets up, turns around to address the theater, and screams “How can you all just sit here watching this crap?! It’s Horrible! HORRIBLE!!!”
She proceeded to scream “Horrible!” all the way up the aisle and out of the theater. A few people followed her out, but most of us just sort-of chuckled in our seats. We all still say that line from time to time when we’re sitting around watching a bad movie.
As for the OP, I didn’t exactly “hate” it, but I wouldn’t see it again, either. What bothered me the most was that Keitel used that same “pretend to start crying” schtick that he used at the end of Reservoir Dogs.
For my money, any time I can catch a glimpse of Harvey Keitel’s shriveled little pecker – it’s worth 8 and a half bucks.
I have been trying to imagine the following credit:
Bad Lieutenant
Screenwriter…Ruth Prawer Jhabvala
Based on the novel by…E.M.Forster
and I think it might…no, forget it.
Dooku, I used to go the Inwood all the time. That brought back a lot of memories. Thanks.
warmgun, I used to love going to the bar there, too.
I still love going to the Inwood lounge. IT sets the mood before a Friday night midnight movie.
I love that film. I own it. For years now, I have enjoyed sitting back and watching the film with people who have never seen it before. Inevitably, someone says, “why the f*** is he doing that?”
Answer: “Because he’s a bad lieutenant!”
True…very true.
Personally, I also thought the Bad Lieutenant was pretty bad. However, I’ll see anything that Keitel does.
