Badtz Maru - slag when slagging is called for. Yeah, they’re flat-out awful, but they are religious - they have lots of lyrics - yeah, shallow lyrics, but still - about Christ, etc. They tried to distance themselves from the Christian rock movement after an interview with them containing swearing (gasp!) caused them to be shunned by the Christian music community.
Let’s not forget Tori Amos. Her first CD “Little Earthquakes” blew me away. She’s crazy, in her lyrics, but her voice is that of true beauty.
Anything by Lucinda Williams is fabulous, and a lot of Annie Lennox’s, but especially Train In Vain.
