My horny cat?

My cat has been acting strange lately. He meows A LOT! He sits in the litter box for 10-15 minutes just sitting there doing nothing. Today he was sitting with his legs open on my desk and I saw the “lipstick” come out. I think he may be horny, but I had him neutered 2 years ago when he was a 2 year old cat. He’s 4 now. Is there any side effect to having an older cat neutered? Can he still get horny after he was neutered? Did the neutering not take effect? Why is his behavior so weird? He’s never done this before. The other cats just give him weird looks.

Yes.

I mean I’m sure the neutering took effect. Nothing equivical about no balls.

But they can still get horny (just like castrated guys).

All I can think is there’s a female cat in heat somewhere…that’s when i’ve seen my balless kitties get horny. They still respond to the scent, with whatever testosterone they have left. Other than that I don’t know. But it happens.

Take him to the vet - he may have a UTI or kidney stone. He could be hanging out in the litter box because je’s ambasrrassed he’s dribbling urine, or because he still feels the urge to pee. He could be crying because he’s in pain.

My first thought is take him to the vet! Quickly! I had a cat who had a urinary blockage, and what got my attention was that he sat in his box and yowled at me, while trying to pee, when I got home one day. He probably would have died if I hadn’t gotten him in right away, as in that evening.

But yes, they can get horny. He used to hump things, even after being neutered as a kitten. Silly kitties.

For the love of God yes, get him to a vet ASAP. Sounds exactly like crystals in his urine. They block the urethra and if he doesn’t get tapped soon it’ll back up into his kidneys and totally smoke 'em!

Bad news: some kitties tend to get this more frequently than others. This is extremely likely to be a recurring problem and will probably do him in sooner or later. Sorry.

Second (or third) the motion to get him to a vet pronto.

My goodness, PrehensileRectum, what a wonderful user name! Does it refer to you or to one of your cat’s?

There must be a story behind (pardon pun) that name.

Another “get him to the vet” vote. There are veterinary diets available that can reduce the occurance of kidney stones and let him live a normal life, but he’ll have to see the vet first.

As has been mentioned, sitting in the litterbox doing nothing is a bad sign. It might mean that he feels the urge to urinate, but can’t. This means blockage, which can be fatal for a cat. Meowing a lot may also signify pain and discomfort.

Get him to a vet now. We almost lost a cat because of a situation just like this – wandering around, meowing, acting out of the ordinary, seeming distraught.

Is he sore if you try to touch his lower abdomen? For our cat, he seemed very firm and stiff in that region, and it definitely hurt.

There’s an update on the cat that’s sad. I can’t find him. He was let out of the house last night and hasn’t been seen since and my mother refuses to take him to the vet because the gas bill has gone up $40 dollars, blah, blah , blah. Is there any low cost or maybe practicing veterinarians that would help the cat if I brought him there?

I was about to cast another vote for ‘take him to the vet pronto’ when I read you couldn’t find the poor cat.

Is there a place outside he usually hangs out? I should assume, I guess that you’ve checked all his usual haunts. But, seriously, check any good looking hiding places (the type that might look good to a cat I mean). Dark, secluded. Can a creature get under your house if it wants? One of my childhood cats was hit by car and dragged itself under our house to hide - it took us a long time to find him and even longer to get him out (he survived).

I really hope you find him - and that your mother lets you take him to the vet!

I’m afraid I can’t help with low-cost vets, I don’t even know any in my corner of the world, let alone yours.

Keep us updated!

Theres a way to get under the house. I hope he didn’t go anywhere to just die in pain of these kidney stones. He disappeared last March and we didn’t see him for 3 days. I thought he was gone. I went to the animal shelter with much crying, flyers, and no help from the damn workers there. I was coming home one day and saw him cross the road (he never goes to the other side it’s a very wide street we live on) and he was bloody. We still never figured out what happened to him. I had to practically beg my mom to pay his $400 vet bill. He had head trauma and coughed a lot. The vet said he was hit by a car or beat up. He has a scar on his nose and he limped for the first few days we found him, but otherwise I guess he recovered. I hope he comes back this time. I don’t have control about letting the cats out. If I had it my way I wouldn’t let them out because it’s so dangerous, but they always get let out anyway.

Such as sad story…I hope you find the cat and I echo the others - I almost lost my cat to a urinary tract infection because I was not recognizing the clear signs he was giving me. The litterbox sitting/doing nothing is a big one.

Those types of infections are very painful for the animal. If you find your cat tell your mom about the pain and maybe she will give in and let you take the cat in. Otherwise, I’d do it anyway yourself and work out a payment plan with the vet. If it is a blockage, your cat could die from it.

That truly worries me. Cats tend to go off on their own and hide when they are not feeling well, as you said – my cat, that I mentioned earlier, we found under the barbeque on the patio. Fortunately, he was orange and white, and not difficult to spot.

In terms of a low-cost vet, that’s a tough one. Could you offer to pay the cost of the exam? Usually the vetrinarian will explain to the person bringing in the animal about the pain they’re going through, and that will help if he needs further help. It can be expensive if a cat gets a blockage; often, they’ll need to switch to special food.

Please explain to your mother that this is likely life-threatening and extremely painful for your cat.

If your mom is unwilling or unable to provide necessary medical care for the cat, he’d be better off given away to someone who can provide for his needs. Even if you have to turn him in to an open-access shelter: it’s better than dying slowly and in pain.

You might also ask your vet about a payment plan or financing his treatment through Care Credit. Although I think your mom would have to be the one to arrange it (it sounds like you are probably a minor).

I hope he returns and is okay. I too wish you were able to keep him indoors; he’s much safer that way. Good luck.

Please update! Have you found him?
