My ipod doesn't work!

I bought a new ipod touch on tuesday, and it stopped working! I bought it at WalMart but I don’t have my receipt. Will apple have some way to know how long the manufacturer warranty is still good for? Can I bring it to an apple store to have it repaired or replaced? If you have had your ipod repaired or replaced at an apple store, what happened? Did you have to surrender the device while they shipped it back to china or whatever, or did they just replace it on the spot?

I’m seriously bummed. :frowning:

Some stores will have record of your purchase on their store transaction system and can print out a duplicate receipt. I know Best Buy and Circuit City can/could do this. It might be worth inquiring. Have you tried a hard reset of the device?

Yeah, first I’d say to try a hard restart. If that doesn’t work, have you registered it with Apple online? Usually that happens when you first sync it in iTunes. If so, you have a one year manufacturers warranty and they will either fix it or replace it. I’m not quite sure how that works, though. In all likelihood, if it’s just being fixed you will have to surrender it for up to three or so weeks while they work on it. Even then, you likely won’t even get your same unit back but a different one.

Some people don’t know how to to do a hard reset of their ipod touch; hold down the top button while holding down the home button (the one on the front). After about 10 seconds you should see the Apple logo. A great many ipod disasters have been solved this way, hope it helps.

As long as you bring back the original credit card, they can get the record of the transaction. Also, I’ve heard that if you’re just insistent enough that you bought the product there, they are usually willing to give you a 1 for 1 exchange for a new product.

Me, neither, that’s why I didn’t give instructions

I have an ipod classic (which, incidentally, needs to be fixed at the moment).

iPod touch Troubleshooting Assistant. Step #2 is “reset”

ETA: you can get to this page from iTunes->Help->iPod Help.

Apple may or may not have your warranty information, but here’s one place to check:

(If the direct link doesn’t work, start at apple.com, click “Support” at the top, then “Online Service Assistant” on the right side of the page).

I can’t seem to find any instructions specific to the Touch, but working under the assumption that it’s identical to my iPhone, the serial number should be in Settings -> General -> About.

I tried the hard reset thing, and it didn’t work. I’m going to try returning it to walmart tomorrow. Wish me luck!

Is there an Apple store near you? Even if you didn’t buy it there, they’ll look at it, and if they can’t fix it, they’ll swap you out on the spot.

I’ve had a few glitches with my iPod that were solved by simply plugging it into iTunes again and syncing and recharging. Have you tried that yet?

My first Ipod (generation 3) died after about 14 months. I knew the warranty was only 12 months, but I took a chance, and mailed it to Apple, along with a polite letter explaining that there was no abuse, it just plain died. I got a brand new Ipod in the mail from Apple about a week - 10 days later. That one lasted a little under six months, and when it died I again mailed it to Apple, with another polite letter explaining that this less than 6 month old Ipod just plain died. A week later, I had a replacement delivered. No questions asked, no receipts requested, just poof.

I’ve since bought a generation 5 (80gig) and have had no problems with it.

I have no idea my experience dealing directly with Apple are the norm, but should you run into trouble with the store where you bought it, keep it in mind.
