In this thread I bitched about my son’s heart condition and his upcoming proceedure. Well, they did it on Monday.
First, the funny part of the story (at least to me).
We arrived at the hospital at 6:30 Monday morning. The proceedure was scheduled for 8:00AM. At around 7:30 the nurse brought him in some “Goofy Juice”. Something in the Valium family just to relax him a bit and keep him calm. At 8:00AM when the nurse was getting ready to wheel him down to the Cath Lab, she started pumping a foot pedal on the bed to raise it up. My 10 year old son (who loves street racing games like Midnight Club 3 and the like) sat up and with a very puzzled, but very relaxed look on his face, looked at me glassy eyed and said, “Hyyydraaauuuliiicsss!”
Ok, maybe it was just funny to me, but I was rolling with laughter. It was kind of nice to see him leave my presence with not a care in the world, since he had been so scared for the past month.
So, anyway, about an hour and a half after they wheeled him into the Cath Lab the Dr. came out to see me and his mother. The Dr. showed us a picture of his Aorta with the cath in it and explained that there was nothing for him to do. My son’s coarctation didn’t actually come back. He said that it is pretty hard to tell on an echo and that this was the only way to be 100% sure. He said that my son is perfectly healthy and that he can anything that he wants without having to worry about his heart. All we have to do is keep up the annual cardiologist visits. Man, that was the best damn news I had ever heard.
The Dr. said that they would have him in a room in about 15 minutes and then we could see him. When his mother and I did get to see him he was just barely starting to come out from under the drugs. He didn’t fully come around until about 3:00PM. We stayed the night at the hospital just to make sure he didn’t have any bad effects from the drugs and to make sure he stayed still. He was never in any pain and stayed perfectly still on his back for the 8 hours the nurse asked him too. I am so proud of him. He handled it all much better than I think I would have.
So, in conclusion, this thread is simply an update for the people who requested one, and thanks to all you guys who helped me feel better back when I was freaking out a bit.
