My knife ( a rant and a lament)

Slortar-

I had that happen once and I soaked the knife in rubbing alcohol overnight, then air blasted it (canned air, used for cleaning keyboards), then re-oiled it.

White Lightning ought to fix that up. It’ll actually pull sand out of the pivot, so you can wipe it away. Keep reapplying and wiping till it’s gone. Good stuff, that.

Hm. I might dig it out then and have a go. God, I loved that knife.

Boker makes a nice Barlow-style.

Man, I got an old Barlow somewhere. Where the heck is it?

I wish I still had a fraction of the knives I had when I was a kid. I especially recall the thin folder with engraved snakes, and the yellow bone folder.

In the - how times have changed - category, I remember breaking the tip off my first Swiss Army Knife playing mumblety peg back stage in the grade school auditorium.

And everytime my folks took me to Mexico, I’d bring back another sheath knife. My fave is my first one - with the goat’s foot for a handle.

I’d assume my 13 year old son has at least 5 folders. Some of my old ones, and some new ones of his own.

I don’t carry one now, cause in my job i’m in and out of secured buildings too often. Too much of a hassle. And, I try to carry as little as possible with me.

As far as fighting is concerned, I pretty much agree with most of what Tomcat said. Just not quite sure why he had to focus on that minor aspect of Scylla’s really neat OP.

Dinsdale, well, actually, Scylla mainly, I admit fault with taking the focus off of something that I really shouldn’t have. I got wrapped up in it from the start and kept feeding the fire. I should have started another thread.

I apologize.

Hey, we’ll have none of that reasonable shit here in the Pit!
My kung fu is better than yours, grasshopper.

I almost hate to bump this thread, since it tends towards arguments about who can do what to who with a pocket knife, but there was some discussion above of sharpening.

It strikes me that this is something you can do or it’s not something you can do. If you can use a stone and a steel, feel free to ignore what follows.

If you can’t, then go out and buy yourself a Henckels Twinsharp. It’s easy to use, you just pull the knife through until it stops making scraping noises. It will keep your knife as sharp as you need it. It won’t be as sharp as it would if you could use a stone and a steel, and it doesn’t work on the thick blades you find on fighting knives, but for your average pocket or kitchen knife, it’ll get the job done.

I bought one for my parents when I got tired of trying to cook in their house and finding that their (gift from me last Christmas) chef’s knife wouldn’t cut a tomato on the first pass.
