My Monitor is making a high pitched noise

My computer monitor is making a high-pitched noise. Any ideas on how to stop it?

Or do I have to go buy a new one? It is starting to get on my nerves.

Sledgus Hammerus - North American variety - 20-lbs full grown. Should do the trick.

Best Buy - under $200 for a decent monitor…

Common wisdom back in the day was that this was caused by a failing flyback transformer. Curiously, it was one of the few problems that could be reliably solved for a while by percussive maintenance. That is, a good solid whack on the side of the monitor would cause the whine to decrease for a while.
(Not responsible for any damage done to your monitor by taking this advice.)

Incipient failure mode - Could last quite some time and potentially (I’m told) put a permanent “notch” in your hearing for that frequency id your ears are assaulted by it long enough.

17"+ tube monitors are practically free these days. Hell… I’ve got a few I’m looking to dump. Just check out yor local thrift and bring a laptop to test them with.

Switch the resolution or the refresh rate and the noise may go away.

Well OK, I suppose I’ll bite the bullet and get a new one. I’ve been meaning to get a big flat screen anyway.

I’ve just oredered a 20 inch flat screen. I hope I can put up with the noise until next week when it comes in. (Although I haven’t heard it for a few hours.)

If it gets too annoying in the meantime, you can try changing the refresh rate up or down to see if one of the other rates makes the noise quiet down or go away. This may or may not alleviate the problem, but it’s worth a try.

Thanks for the suggestions. I have upped the refresh rate and the noise has almost gone away. It seems to be now at the high-end of my hearing. It is at the I-can’t-quite-hear-it-but-I-kinda-hear-something range. Less annoying than it was.

The new flat-screen should arrive this week, I would expect and then this can go away.

Does the turret need to be oiled? Metal on metal can lead to high-pitched squeaking. And if you’re going to take on any Confederate ironclads, you’ll want to be sure that it can rotate freely.

Oh, sorry. I thought you meant the USS Monitor.
