"My Name is Earl," 1-5-06

Yeah, that was hilarious. I can’t believe they got away with it.

I love Mr. Loplop! I was so glad to see him again – it’s those little moments that make the show so wonderful.

And the kids using the weedeater on the carpet? Or playing baseball with a teacup and pictures for bases? Man, do those kids get to have fun in their roles or what?

I didn’t catch all the spanish but I think it was something about being blonde and something about being able to speak two launguages so I’m guessing it wasn’t so much an insult as her saying “I’m not the loser you think I am”

I loved the last exchange in the scene about Earl sleeping with the guy’s wife. “With Linda? Oh, well that’s all right.”

“wakey, wakey, hands off snakey”

This is the fourth episode I’ve watched and it is great. What is the backstory with Catalina? She seems to be the brother’s full time maid. How do they afford her? I take it she is not working in exchange for sexual favours from the boys.

Catalina is a maid at the motel where the brothers live. She is their “friend.” But Randy has dibs.

My mom also thought that was very funny.

Hey Good News! Two SAG Award nominations for Earl.
Jason Lee for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Comedy Series
And Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series.
SAG Award Nominations

Glad to see Earl getting some critical respect.

Joy: You’re just takin’ crab meat out of the shell, you’re not doing a kidney transplantation.

I fully expect the show to win some Peabody or Humanitas awards. It seems to sneak in little lessons like the one in this episode on forgiveness that wouldn’t be out of place in a Sunday sermon. (Not that there’s anything wrong with that. It’s still a very funny show. But it also manages to transcend most television.)

Randy: “It’s like chaos in there. I saw a pig eatin’ his own poo!”

Anybody else see a resemblance between the camp owner and Don Imus? Intentional?

Okay, I’ve been set straight as to the relationship between the brothers and the latin maid. Why do the maid and Earl’s ex-wife hate each other so much? It has been asked before, but does anyone have an english translation of the long reply by the maid in Spanish. Also did anyone notice the sound when Earl’s brother jumped on a hay bail to escape the chicken? It sounded like he jumped on a solid wooden stair. I woudn’t usually notice something like that, but it was so out of place.

Catalina hates Joy because Joy is a bitch. Joy hates Catalina because Joy is a bitch.

To answer my own question about a Spanish translation with Google Fu:

From this website

"…in another scene she speaks spanish when responding to Joy. Let me translate what she said…“To all the latino in the audience thanks for watching and for those non-latinos thanks for taking the time and learning another language.”

I can’t confirm it is true, but is not dissappointing!

That sounds about right. Effing brilliant.

There was a pop cultural reference in this episode that whooshed right over my head. At one point someone says that one of the kids was inspired to remove his teardrop tattoo. I know it must have been a reference to something but I have no idea what. Does anyone? I don’t know why this occured to me five days after watching the show.

I do believe the teardrop tattoo means the little boy has killed someone. I think it’s practiced among some gangs. Most the sites I’ve Googled up have had Hispanic names involved. Here’s a court opinion from a murder case in Wisconsin concerning such a tattoo.

I’ve heard the tattoo either means that you killed someone OR that you served a certain amount of time in jail.
