He was using “gay” as an epithet when my sister interjected with “what’s wrong with homosexuality”. I didn’t get involved since I figure pretty much every juvenile male goes through a phase of “gay is icky” - if they have a working mind, they fairly rapidly get over it.
However, he did come up with this gem when probed by my sister as to why he didn’t like homosexuals: “50% of homosexuals would like to rape your heart out”. I honestly have no clue where he came up with that.
If Susan Sontag was right about the gay male sensibility being the key esthetic of modern life, I can almost understand a young, pre-socialized, but presumptively straight male child feeling a little aggrieved about the world he was growing up into. (I know I did. But I wasn’t nine. More like 12 or 13.)
You’re his older brother. No matter the age difference, he is going to learn some of his attitudes towards sexuality from YOU. You may want want to start either correcting his views, or at least teach him that not everything you hear is the truth. He is definitely the right age to learn that last, and it sounds like he needs a lesson in gullibility, stat. Get crackin’!
She’s dead. She was also a cranky Jewish lesbian literary and cultural critic who had no more place outside major metropolitan areas than a rubber duck has outside a bathtub.
He’s nine. All his life he’s been told to beware of strangers who want to abduct him. These strangers aren’t women. So when young boys try to puzzle out amongst themselves what a guy who abducts them would do to them, of course they work out or are told that they would be raped and then possibly killed. Since they are also told that males who want sex with males are homosexual, if stands to reason from his viewpoint that there are a lot of homosexuals who rape boys. So his opinion isn’t exactly odd from his standpoint.
