There is a difference, but I am not sure which side has the best of it here. Teaching young kids good values is all very fine, but tying those values to a particular political party (“Why Mommy is a Democrat”, etc.) seems very skeevy to me, and even risky to values. Political parties change. Remember when the Republicans were the party of Lincoln, and the Democrats the party of slavery and segregation? Even within living memory, there were Republican administrations that were, in many respects, more liberal in practice than the Obama administration is now.

Also, much as I despise teaching kids that open carry, and even owning guns, are great things, I am not sure it amounts to teaching hate. Perhaps the book does “teach hate”, I don’t really know, but a “guns are good” message, revolting as it is in its own right, does not necessarily amount to or involve that. (Furthermore, although I can’t say for sure, because I haven’t read them, I do wonder whether books like “Why Mommy/Daddy is a Democrat” can actually get that message over without mentioning that there are such such people as Republicans, and pretty strongly implying that they are evil. If so, these books are, to some extent, in the business of “teaching hate”.)

The remarks about teaching hate were prompted by this post:

They were aimed at a book that preaches hate against “liberals” (actually straw-man liberals), not at the book mentioned in the OP.

The reference to “Poe’s Law” makes me think the poster believes “Help! Mom! There Are Liberals Under My Bed!” is intended as satire, and only interpreted as a hateful screed by those so inclined. IMO and YMMV as always.

Charlie and the carbine factory?

If they were so aimed or prompted, it was not overt. I was responding to Little Nemo, who quoted, and so was apparently responding to, Smapti’s post about the “Why Mommy/Daddy is a Democrat” (etc.) series of books, which I discussed. buddha_david’s post about “Help! Mom! There Are Liberals Under My Bed!” was not referenced by Little Nemo, so I did not reference it either.

In any case, I do not think I agree that criticizing liberals, represented as straw-talking-animals and not particular people or real groups of people, amounts to “teaching hate”. It looks much more like teaching (conservative) values to me. They are not values with which I, personally, have much sympathy, but my whole point is that there is a world of difference between “teaching hate” and teaching values to kids (which all parents do, and should do), even values you or I may think are badly misguided and likely to do harm. I do not think conservatives are necessarily so morally undeveloped as to be incapable of hating (what they consider to be) the sin, but loving the sinner. (I hope liberals aren’t, either.)

No, I don’t. Because I’m not 200 years old.

I do remember when many Democrats were anti-civil rights. But that’s because I’m pretty old. The Republicans need to stop riding on a moral superiority that’s decades out of date.

I have no particular objections to My Parents Open Carry. That’s a book that’s conveying its message in a positive manner.

I was referring to Help! Mom! There Are Liberals Under My Bed! Unfortunately, that reference got lost in the string of post quotes (I was quoting Smapti who was quoting davidm who was quoting buddha-david who mentioned the book). That book has no positive message I can see. It’s just about Democrats being bad.

Dad’s little Hitler mustache on the cover of “My Parents Open Carry” is a bit disturbing, but the book sounds like a blast - especially the chapter titled “Mom and Dad Don’t Take Shit At The P.T.A. Meeting”.

And it’s a great companion volume to “Melanie’s Marvellous Measles”, which celebrates the joys of rashes and high fevers which you can share with other kiddies.

The author wrote a sequel, “Help! Mom! Hollywood’s in my Hamper!: Another Small Lesson in Conservatism” The frontpiece contains glowing reviews for Liberals Under my Bed by Rush Limbaugh and the National Review.

Poe’s Law: “…without a clear indication of the author’s intent, it is difficult or impossible to tell the difference between an expression of sincere extremism and a parody of extremism.” It is indeed difficult, but I think we can get a grasp on the intended audience. Also I see from the Amazon page that, “DeBrecht served as co-captain of “Security Moms for Bush” for South Carolina.” So there’s our indication of author’s intent.

No title change needed: Chitty Chitty Bang Bang could take on a whole new meaning.

‘No Country For Old Teachers’.
