"My So Called Life" on DVD

I know the show well, and am introducing it to my SO and her 15 y/o daughter.

Damn, that’s some good writing. Damn, that’s some good acting. Damn if I can’t understand and feel every character’s emotions and point of view.

And damn the inconceivable idiocy of cancelling this show. It’s 9 years old, or so, and still the best thing I’ve ever seen on television.

Just watched the Christmas episode last night. As a guy, I don’t like having to struggle to keep from sobbing, but I watched it again, anyway.

Damn good show. Good lessons. My SO thinks it should be required watching for teens & their parents.

DVD’s have no special features though. Oh, well.

This series is on my to buy list. Claire Daines is a goddess. She is so incredibly talented that even when she is sitting on the bed being infirm she out acts all the other characters on the screen (Little Women). The story arcs in My So Called Life felt real and very relatable on both a personal and even a larger level. I can’t imagine why the show was taken off the air really. I think it was because it made too many controversial statements, like Ricky being a gay homeless boy who was thrown out for coming out of the closet. (Did I misremember that?)

I don’t think we ever find out why he was really thrown out. He was raised by his uncle, and was out of the closet for many months before he was out of the house.

So many unanswered questions in that show…

Can anyone not lose it when Claire Daines starts to cry?

The best Christmas episode of any TV show ever. The DVD is worth it for that alone.

And I was in my 40s when the show was on – it is not a show for just teenagers.
