My son got fired...questions about finding a similar job

My son got a job at Steak 'n Shake! This is a job he applied for last summer, but because he was going away to college, they couldn’t hire him. But still, last year, the manager called the house to congratulate us for the good job we did in raising him and teaching him how to apply for jobs (he showed up in a suit) The manager remembered him again and gave him the job practically on the spot, and said he was willing to work around his class schedule.

He starts training tomorrow…this was one of the jobs where he did not list his Sonny’s job. He was a bit concerned about “lying” on the application, but I told him if it ever comes up that he was only at Sonny’s for three months so he didn’t feel the need to list it, and in any event, if he does as good a job there as he did at Sonny’s, the subject probably never come up. Shifts are assigned based on merit.

I know that’s a load off his mind, that he’s got a job again and can pay for school (it might be a bit close, since the next tuition payment is due next Wed, but we’ll have him covered.) He does like working for tips, and I think he can make more money at it than some $7/hr job at Target or McDonald’s.

No kidding. Including the good ones. Apparently the legendary Chez Panisse was also a legendary hotbed of drugs and sex. To listen to Anthony Bourdain they were not unusual.

There’s something that keeps your friendly 3rd shift Denny’s server and cook up and perky all night, and it ain’t coffee.

A known and public bragging about it drug addict= nicotine.

Well, my son has officially entered the real world…he has more training tomorrow, which happens to be his birthday. The fuel pump in his car is going, so he’s freaking over that, but it just so happens this is one of the two months of the year that I have a free paycheck, so I told him he will be covered for tuition/books/car until he can pay me back with his tips.

That’s good news, Ivylass, but I wonder how much he’ll make in tips at SnS. When I eat there, my check is usually like 6 or 7 bucks. Twenty percent of 6 bucks is only a buck twenty.

I never understood how Steak n Shake servers could get by. The server at Steak n Shake does roughly the same amount of work as a server at Outback. But when I eat at Outback, my check is over $20. Because of this, I usually overtip at Steak n Shake, maybe give them 3 bucks, but that’s still a smaller tip than they would have gotten for the same amount of work at Outback.

He did say they had a bigger lunch rush than Sonny’s ever did, especially in the middle of the week. He also said, looking over the menu, the prices are about the same if not a bit higher than Sonny’s.

So, we’ll see how it goes. It may have more of a feel of a diner than a sit down restaurant, but a lot of the “sides” are not included unless you upgrade to a “meal.”

Whatever it is, they need to give some to the 1st and 2nd shift employees at MY local Denny’s!
