He’s only three years old, but he seems to be very secure in his masculinity.
This afternoon, he wanted me to paint his fingernails. I was going to paint them just clear, but he liked the brown better, because it was the same color as his hair.
After I got done, he picked up his play tools, put on his Bob the Builder construction hat, and “fixed” his dump truck, the bookcase, and his bedroom door.
Later on, we were flipping the channels on TV, and ran across some ice dancing program. My son was still working on the bookcase, but when my husband said “Hey John! Look! Pretty girls!” John dropped what he was doing, raced to the TV, and watched the skating programs. And when that was finished, he happily pretended to be his sister’s ice skating partner.
And then, he sat in the bathroom on his potty for 20 minutes, looking at one of his dad’s Guitar Player magazines.
My two year old loves to put on makeup, have his fingernails painted, dress up in dresses and crowns, and play with dolls and barbies. He has recently begun to play with cars and blocks and to throw the dolls around and hit the barbies. Also, recently he cried when Mtgman left for work, he wanted to go. I think he is learning that girls stay home (we have three girls) and that boys go to work. Other than that he is perfectly normal.
My three-year-old son was pretty bummed when we went holiday clothes shopping recently. His sister gets a tiara thing and a velvet dress with all sparkles on and he gets—pants and a sweater. Dang.
He is also currently crazy about a very lifelike toy vacuum cleaner at his babysitter’s, but, to be fair, he goes for anything with wheels on it.
