I’m actually quite surprised at the number of queries I get about it. Or maybe I shouldn’t be given how race sensitive this board is. But I don’t feel I post anything controversial.
Anyway, my username is a reference toSifl and Olly. I capitalized it because the lowercase “L” didn’t look right.
Thank you for explaining, Sifl. Because I am a huge Sifl & Olly fan (rock!) and could not for the life of me figure out whether or not you were too…or if it was an acronym
I got the username Iggy from the prevalence of blue iguanas on our island and not as a tribute to Iggy Pop who is one of the my eclectic neighbors with a vacation home on the remote end of our little island.
I picked mine because it’s my favorite character from Alice in Wonderland. I have no idea whether I’m perceived as male or female. Maybe you guys can chime in and tell me <grin>.
No, I remember that show. Did people mention it in threads or PM you? I only remember one person accused of a racist name, and the reference would’ve been so esoteric that you’d have to be a Nazi or really into recognizing their signs to call it out. I had to look it up, but Sifl is the black one.
Things seem sensitive if everybody is bothered by it or a few people are loud enough.
For several years, I envisioned something like the following :
You lived with a male roommate (pictured your gender to be male also). You were in your room with a lovely lady and forgot to hang a tie/sock on your outside doorknob. Your roommate barges in saying something like “Dude - why’dja eat up all the peanut butter?” You pull away long enough to yell “Man - get out!”
Then in some thread someone pointed out there’s this thing called the French language.
:smack:
Yes, although it further confuses people that I’m not French, and they keep hauling me to account on the quite rare occasions when I say I don’t fancy eating some specific thing.
It was the early '90s. The internet was new, and wild, and free. My dad signed us up for AOL. We had to pick screen names. What screen name would I pick? Andy was chosen! I didn’t want to be Andy347!
But then it came to me… Roman pillars!
Roman pillars?!? you ask.
Yes, Roman pillars. Capital “I” looks kind of like a Roman pillar (with serif, of course). So I’d surround my name with Roman pillars. IAndyI was taken. Other variations probably were too. But not IIIAndyIII. So I became IIIAndyIII. My name, flanked by Roman pillars. Intriguing, masculine, mighty.
Then two weeks later I forgot my password and had to create a new one. By then, there weren’t as many options left. I went with IIAndyIIII (2 I’s, then “Andy”, then 4 I’s – people are constantly getting this wrong, including on the Dope).
And at some point in the intervening decades, I got tired of hitting the shift button.
So that’s the story. Was it everything you hoped it would be?
PMs. I’m not being flooded or anything but there has been quite a few it seems. No one has come out and called me racist but I get the “I’m just asking questions” type.
Yeah. For the record I’m not bothered by it in the least. I think it’s funny because I chose something so irreverent.
Mangetout, I remember a thread a while back where you explained yours but I still mispronounce it in my head every time I see it.
