Last night I thought my computer was freezing up cause when I clicked on things nothing happened. I restarted it and when it was rebooting, I got the message–No mouse detected.
Well I have shut it down, unplugged and re-plugged mouse, cleaned the fuzz out of the bottom of it, reinstalled the driver but all to no avail. When I reinstalled the driver, I got the message “there is something wrong with this equipment but Windows is unsure what is is.” You think?
Well I can still work the computer without it but it’s just a lot slower and more awkward. I’m going to talk to Gateway and see if they will replace it since it is literally just hours out of warranty. In the meantime I’ll see if one of my friends or family has an extra one laying around the house that I can borrow until I can get a new and improved one.
How in the world did we ever survive without the mouse? Any sugggestions on what to get next?
I had to survive without one for two weeks because my computer is apparently backwards from the rest of the Universe and can’t have anything on COM Port 1 or it conflicts with the modem, which must be on COM 3. The tech people had it on COM 1 so I had to uninstall it and then finally figured out by myself ( a major coupe for me) how to change the COM Ports when I got sick of tabbing around and not being able to get into some programs without a mouse.
I’ve had a mouse die on me in the middle of a holiday weekend. Nothing for it but to go buy another one ASAP.
If you bought with a credit card, a lot of them double your guarantee.
You didn’t give enough information but I first suggest what I always suggest, unplug everything from wall for a minute or more, thats everything, plug it all back into wall & start it. Resets any appliance.
I work for gateway doing Tech support – if the tech wont replace the part, ask to speak to a senior tech. they should replace it. If they wont, shoot me an e-mail (kinoons@yahoo.com) and we can work something out…2 days out of warranty we should be able to take care of you.
New mice can be typically be had for 10 to - 55. I am assuming you have a PS-2 port mouse. If you are not near a store and finances are tight I have a box of 10 perfectly functional slightly used Compaq PS-2 mice under my desk looking for a mission. I’ll give you one (or two if you want) free if you pay shipping.
Ok, I talked to Gateway tech support and got absolutely nowhere. The screens are really hard to navigate without a mouse. I keep hitting the tab key but when there are multiple frames, it’s hard to get to the right box.
Tech support basically told me to do everything I’ve already done. So far I’ve.
turned off computer, unplugged and took mouse apart-cleaned it and looked for anything that looks obviously broken- found nothing, checked all the pins and cord, plugged it back in and waited to see if Windows could detect it. Nothing.
Next I unplugged computer completely, restarted, reinstalled driver, restarted–nothing.
Removed and reinstalled the mouse completely-nothing but the message that “there is something wrong with this device but Windows isn’t sure what the problem is”
Tech support gave me a link to further troubleshooting that I couldn’t open without a mouse. I told him this and he said he would send me something in E-mail that I haven’t gotten yet.
All in all I’ve gotten nowhere with it today. I’ve given up on it and am going to enjoy what’s left of the day by sitting on my deck and not worrying about this any more today. After I get the tech support E-mail, I’ll try that but I think I’m just going to call Gateway customer service and see what they will do. ** Kinoon** I just may take you up on your offer of support if I don’t get results by conventional channels. Astro I really can afford to buy a new one, I just hate the hassle of it. Thanks for the offer though. I may take you up on it yet.
Yeah, spend $10 on another cheap serial mouse, bring the old one to the store to match the connector. Then you ccan probably mail the old one to them & they give you another one, then you have a spare.
You can navigate windows without a mouse, its a wonderful project to teach yourself just in case.
