My water lily is sitting in my backyard fish pond-it has just opened a beautiful, deep red flower.
Can I expect more floweres from it?
And, can I over winter the plant by leaving it in the pool?
Congratulations. Water lilies are among the most beautiful of all flowers. Yes you can expect more blooms. If you have a hardy lily you can winter it over in a pond that is at least 3 ft (1 meter) deep. If you have a tender lily you will need to remove it from the pond and store it in moist sand. It has been a while since I have stored a lily overwinter so hopefully someone will post better instructions on how to do it.
What kind is it, Ralph, does it have a cultivar name?
Hardy lilies have the bloom on the surface, not above it and have solid green leaves. Tropicals hold the flower on a stem above the water and usually have mottled leaves.
Generally hardies will make it through the Winter if the water is deep enough for the water not to freeze.
Congratulations, and welcome to the hobby!
