I’m suitably convinced that the Bermuda Triangle and other oft reported “Mysterious” areas (vile vortices etc) are a load of rubbish.

But are there areas of ocean where shipping losses are disproportionately high? Mysteriously high even.

Point Conception off the Santa Barbara coast is pretty dangerous, but it ain’t no mystery. It gets super windy with big waves and real foggy. It was the site of the Honda Point Disaster where 7 destroyers were lost and two additionally were grounded but saved.

It’s been a nightmare since the conquistador days.

Cape Horn is pretty bad too, but also nothing mysterious about that.
