Our instrumentation is Voice, Piano, Bass, and Tenor Sax. Just met today and it went well. We are playing traditional jazz songs like Fever, Don’t Get Around Much Anymore…Diana Krallish stuff. We will be milling names over the week. I’ve tried…but what the hell do you name a jazz quartet? I’d like it not to be cheesy (like Swinging Saxs) or anything like that. Any ideas?
Can’t go too wrong with The Your Name Here Quartet.
The Jazz Messengers
The [your city here] Jazz Explosion

I’d vote for this approach, too. Gut feel for me is that well over 80% of groups who want to appeal to a Krallish audience will avoid the MJQ or Flecktones or Supersax naming ideas, and go straight for the leader’s name: Brubeck, Shearing, Davis, Metheny, Mulligan, the list goes on forever.
If you consider yourselves leaderless, or don’t want the name tied to one of you, you might pick your location (city, school, even state) as the basis, like the Honolulu Jazz Quartet does.
Otherwise, leave the cutesy names to the Rock groups.
The Melodious Thonks? Okay, mebbe not.
Considering your town’s history, The Amalgamation, or perhaps just something simple with a member’s name Quartet or even The Silk Quartet.
Okay, on preview what Zeldar and Beware of Doug said.
Quasi Modality.
My brother named his jazz band Blue Train after the Coltrane tune. Pick a song and play off that maybe?

(2) “The Quartet Quartet”
