Name my whatchamacallit

I found a gizmo tucked away which I want to see if anyone in my family/friends/acquaintances/near perfect strangers would like to have before I just throw it away, but it would help a lot if I knew what it was called. (So useless to send out email saying, Want a whatchamacallit?)

I know what it’s used for: keeping count of something, one by one. Like, how many people enter a fairground or how many sheep pass through a gate.

Description: It’s a roughly roundish mass of bright shiny metal that fits easily into your palm. There’s a loop that you slide over a finger that keeps it oriented right, and a single plunger-style clicker you work with your thumb. There’s a window onto a four rotating disk ‘display’ that shows the count – it advances by one each time you press the clicker. There’s also a knob you twirl to reset the numbers to zero.

So…what am I holding in my hand? Anyone?

I don’t know the technical name for it, but I’ve heard it called a “click counter” or just “clicker.” I work heavy highway construction, and we often issue them to truck drivers for use in counting the loads they haul in a shift. (Operation is simple enough even for most truck drivers. I’M KIDDING!!!)

I believe it is technically known as a “hand tally counter” or a “tally counter”.

'Zat it?

That’s it! We have a winner!
Thank you, DDG!
