In the Spider-Man ride in Universal Studios’ Islands of Adventure (Orlando FL), the plot is Spider-Man battling Electro, Hydroman, Doctor Octopus, Hobgoblin, and a female villain who looks like Carnage. There’s a picture of her here (upper right).
I have two questions:
[ol]
[li]Does anyone know her name?[/li][li]Has this character ever appeared in any of the Marvel titles? I’m wondering if she was created just for the ride or if she is part of the canon.[/li][/ol]
Her name is Shriek. She was a product of the 1990s (not known as the best time to be a comic book reader), and she may have been a new host for the alien symbiote that created Carnage. I believe she may have even had an action figure from Toy Biz’s mid-'90s Spider-Man toy line.
That said, I thought she was an odd choice to use on the ride, seeing as how nobody knows her at all, and even Carnage has some recognition from the video games, toys, and '90s cartoon series.
Shriek was one of 5 symbiote offspring taken from Venom by, I believe, the Jury in an attempt to create/control their own Venom/Carnage.
They shoulda just used Venom. He at least was part of the Sinister Six in one of its formations. Regardless, ain’t gonna stop me from going to ride the ride for the first time this June!
I suspect they were looking for a token female villian for the ride. That said, wouldn’t be a better choice available?
Actually, at the moment, I can’t think of any female Spider-villians. Okay, there’s the female version of Dr. Octopus. (Octavius’ girlfriend/wife, I believe.)
Since the point of this thread has been made (i.e. the identification of Shriek), let’s move things along. Name some female Spider-villians.
Mmm, Black Cat or Titania in 3-D… you could lose an eye!
And Max Carnage, the ride (and the entire Islands of Adventure theme park) are awesome. You’ll have such a good time, but you must be waiting in line when the park opens, and go straight to the Spider-Man ride. Even during the off-season, the line for that is usually well over an hour. Other than that, stay hydrated throughout the day!
I did a little digging in my sparse collection. Geez, Spidey really doesn’t have many female enemies. There are quite a few mercenaries/vigilantes who make his spider-senses tingle, though.
I’d have to say Titania is the best female villian Spider-Man has had, though she’s apparently reformed now after fighting cancer. (She’s also married to the Absorbing Man.)
The female Dr. Octopus was a student of Doc Ock. I don’t know what she’s up to now. There was a witch named Calypso, who’s apparently dead, and an assassin named Delilah. Princess Python was nice! Basically naked, save for some green body paint and a snake.
Silver Sable is one of the more well-known female Spider-Man characters, but, like the Black Cat, she’s a tweener. (I’d call Cat a vigilante, and Sable a mercenary.)
Oh, here’s a favorite of mine! The White Rabbit! They should do a story which reveals her secret hideout to be a second, hidden grotto at the Playboy mansion. Hef would make a decent boss “villian”. He could have a harem of mercenary/vigilante chicks - The White Rabbit, The Black Cat, Silver Sable would be more of an ally of Hugh’s. Just think of the possibilities, and the sales!
Shriek was Carnages girlfriend during the Maximum Carnage storyline. She had sonic powers, and some sort of ‘causes riots’ power. She never had a symbiote though.
Thanks for the clarification, Bakhesh! I actually saw a picture of Shriek - which, of course, didn’t look like Scream - but, for some reason, didn’t really think too much about it. Maybe I assumed she had more than one “look”, or that she had been a costumed character (Shriek) before becoming a Carnage clone (Scream).
Not quite. IIRC Her origin was in the miniseries Venom- Lethal Protector. The symbiote eggs, buds, whatever were taken by some organization of rich folks building a huge luxury fallout shelter community. They figured that the worldwould nuke itself to death soon, and wanted to be prepared Their masive subterranean complex had just about everything. But, they needed superhuman agents to protect them from any surface survivors who might pose a threat.
Scream was one of two women chosen as subjects. At the end of the series, Venom and Spidey used a machine which had been used to acccelerate the symbiotes’ aging into maturity to age them to death.
Later, all of the new symbiote folks showed up with live symbiotes. As a comic reader, I expect and accept characters returning from seeming death. But, I demand an explanation (That wasn’t Professor X. That was a shapechanging mutant who agreed to replace him whie Proffessor X is in seclusion planning a defense against an alien invasion. You destroyed Ultron 4. But before attacking you, 4 built me Ultron 5. etc). AFAIK no explanation was ever given for the symbiotes’ survival.
RE Universal Studios Islands Of Adventure
I was there 2 years ago. The actor who played Doctor Doom for the superhero parade, really loved that part. He hammed it up wonderfully.
I recommend the Doctor Doom FearFall. I love that thing.
