Name that show?

A few years back I visited a friend in the US, and one lazy afternoon between awful repeats of ‘Whose Line Is It Anyway?’ I was lucky enough to catch a show that has never found its way across the pond, but had me chuckling in a heap on the floor for hours afterwards. Even the concept is funny. It was about a guy that had been shot into space and decided to create two companions to accompany him in his lonely exile from Earth. His punishment (or maybe he just decided to wile away the hours doing this) was to sit through B movies. He and his two friends sat in silouette in front of a cinema screen and did a running commentary. It was hilarious, and the same effect is now being used on DVD’s for films such as ‘Ghostbusters’ and ‘Muppets from Space’. Can you name the programme, and is it as funny as I remember? I only got to see the one.

Mystery Science Theatre 3000.

Here’s the theme song:

In the not-too-distant future–
Next Sunday A.D.–
There was a guy named Joel,
Not too different from you or me.
He worked at Gizmonics Institute,
Just another face in a red jumpsuit.
He did a good job cleaning up the place,
But his bosses didn’t like him
So they shot him into space.

We’ll send him cheesy movies,
The worst we can find (la-la-la).
He’ll have to sit and watch them all,
And we’ll monitor his mind (la-la-la).
Now keep in mind Joel can’t control
Where the movies begin or end (la-la-la)
Because he used those special parts
To make his robot friends.

Robot Roll Call: (Let’s go!)
Cambot! (Pan left!)
Gypsy! (Hi, girl!)
Tom Servo! (What a cool guy!)
Croooow! (What a wisecracker!)

If you’re wondering how he eats and breathes
and other science facts (la la la),
Then repeat to yourself, “It’s just a show,
I should really just relax
For Mystery Science Theater 3000!”

MST3K

The Show was cancelled by Comedy Centeral (the original station) and picked up by the SciFi Channel, who subsequently cancelled it.

There is a movie out. It is also called Mystery Science 3000. They rerun the show (with Mike only) Sunday morning on the SciFi Channel here in the States.

I however, have a nearly complete collection. I have all of the episodes with Joel (thanks to the Turkey Day Marathons) and am missing only a couple of the Mike episodes.

It is indeed as funny as you remember. Unfortunatly it’s addicting behavior, and no one will go to the movies with me anymore.

MST3K rules!!!

Having said that, I think it ruled only as long as Joel was the host… I didn’t get Mike…

If you’d like to learn more about Mystery Science Theater 3000, visit you local library and ask them where they keep the sampo…or visit Satellite News.

P.S. I love you creepy girl, wherever you may be.

Hey I’ve seen that show! Parts of- I never knew that was it. Or it was that. Whatever. It comes on Sci Fi. Gawd…it always struck me as really scary. I never really “got” it, but now that I know, perhaps I too will watch…

Oh my gosh…that is quite possibly the greatest show ever created. Someone should start a petition to get Comedy Central to pick it back up. I’ll start…

::meekly, hoping someone will concur::

Who's with me???

getting the thread live again might help just a girl! there you go, and thanks for the replies, i’ll be off a-huntin’ in the amazon and the like now…

Just a Girl, I got your back. Remember, no matter where you go, stay alive. I will find you.

Was MST3K cancelled because of poor ratings or were the cast just getting tired and ready to call it quits?

For info on just about everything you ever wanted to know, go to
http://www.mst3kinfo.com

For specific information on it’s cancellation and so forth go to

    http://www.mst3kinfo.com/mstfaq/index.html

It’s frequently asked questions and there’s a whole section about that. It’s really sad - apparently we’re never gonna get to see that show ever again!!! (just read the Cancellation FAQs) :frowning:
P.S. As you can tell, I don’t know how to insert links to sites or other threads in these things. Help!!

Ok, apparently all you have to do is put in the address…Boy is my face red :o

Mystery Science Theatre is pure excellance!
It’s funnier than you will ever know. If even 10% of American Television were as creative, original, & hillarious as MST3k I’d be watching t.v. right now instead of being here! Try to see as many MST episodes as you can! You won’t be sorry!

I don’t think it’s ever played outside of America. All I’ve seen was the movie that was released. On video.
