Name that youth fiction book in one scene!

Youth fiction, I may have read this between the ages of 9-12, but might have been earlier. Maybe 1976-1980, but the book was probably written earlier.
It was about a orphan girl who is adopted by an elderly farming couple. They had had a lot of sons, so whenever the woman saw trouble in the yard, she’d run to the door and yell “Boy!”. So all their dogs were named “Boy”, too. At some point the woman wants the adopted girl to come into the house so she goes to the door and yells “Boy!”. The girl, in a nearby tree, decides to ignore the call. The dog comes to the door and the woman says, “I didn’t call you”. The old man points out she yelled “boy!” and not “<name!>”. Woman stomps back inside and the old man, without raising his voice, says “<Name, come inside now”. And she does.

It’s not Anne of Green Gables, I just re-read that book and this scene does not appear in it.

help, please? It’s driving me crazy.

Anybody? I still haven’t figured it out. :frowning:

Sorry, I don’t know the answer, I hope someone finds it for you because it’s making me a little crazy, too . I know you posted that it’s not Anne of Green Gables, but could it have been an adaptation of it? There’s a website, loganberrybooks.com. I’ve never used it, but I think the idea is that based on a description they will try and identify the book for you. I’m not sure how much info they need, or even if it’s a free service. Good luck and please post the title if you find it!

Not that I’m familiar with either book, but my first thought from “not Anne of Green Gables” is Rebeca of Sunnybrook Farm.

I found a version of Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm online, and I don’t think that’s it. The book I am thinking of is more modern and natural in style. Rebecca appears to be raised by two maiden aunts, and I’m sure the girl I’m thinking of was adopted by an elderly m/f couple.

Thanks for the suggestion Patx2! I’ll try there soon.
