The thread on Graham Kerr brought back memories of old cooking shows on cable and I wanted to see if anyone can identify this show that I vaguely remember but was one of my favourites. Not so many details but here’s what I think I remember.
・ Shown on TLC when it was known as The Learning Channel
・ Aired in the mid to late 80’s?
・ Most likely a British production
・ Cooking was done mainly outdoors (I think) using simple ingredients and simple tools, meaning no Cuisinarts or fancy kitchen appliances
・ Not a celebrity chef. Just some guy(?) going to places and talking about the food and history and showing you how to cook it.
I tried searching for 80’s British cooking shows and I found something called Two Fat Ladies. The show I’m thinking of had a kind of similar vibe in that’s it low-key, simple and has scenes in the outdoors. The outdoor scenes I remember were not in an urban areas but more countryside, more in “nature”.
It would be amazing if anyone remembers this show, or better yet, find a clip of it on Youtube.
Sounds like Keith Floyd, who became a bit of a celebrity here, at least.
Rick Stein has done something similar since.
There are some clips on Youtube
I loved Floyd On Food and Floyd On Fish. IIRC, he used Peaches by The Stranglers as the theme music. I also like how he cut to B&W silent footage to indicate the passage of time. While other food presenters would put something in the oven and then pull out a perfect, cooked version from another oven, Floyd got the original dish out of the oven after the interstice.
I don’t remember if I knew he had died.
Oh, Keith Floyd. He was fantastic. Don’t know if that’s what the OP is looking for, but I had to chime in to express my admiration and respect for the guy. He did a wine series, as well, that I was quite fond of. Looking it up, it appears to have been Floyd Uncorked. Made me really appreciate rosés.
Nice find! I can’t say with 100% certainty if this was show I remember but it definitely fills all the right check boxes. I just don’t remember the host drinking and chatting that much:) I saw some clips on Youtube and the ones where he goes to France and Britain felt more familiar than his original “Floyd on Fish”. Thanks for the suggestion.
