Name this TV episode

Been thinking of the old TV shows I used to watch, and I remember one in particular, but I’ll be damned if I can remember what show it was.

There’s an underground vault with a bunch of gold stored inside. Someone breaks in and steals the lot. However, the secret is the gold wasn’t really stolen

The crooks built a second room along the elevator’s path and rewired it so it would stop at the fake empty vault, which was made up to look like the gold had been stolen. Then, when things died down, they could get access to the actual vault and take out the gold at their leisure. I remember a screen shot looking into the elevator shaft, and how if the elevator had gone down to the real vault floor there would be less cable on the cable spool, but there was a bunch still on it. Therefore, the elevator wasn’t really at the vault.

Anyone remember this one?

Sounds like it might be out of the Banacek plotbook. Do you have an era for this.

Ninjaed on Banacek. NCIS had a very similar epi a while back. Not gold but a weapon (?).

madsircool, give us a Polish proverb!

While it does sound Banacek-like, it isn’t one. That’s similar to the one with two hotel rooms and a room safe.

Though it does sound familiar.

Yeah, I just watched that episode which got me thinking about it. I have the Banacek series, and I don’t recall seeing it when I rewatched it, and it’s not in the episode guide.

Tried google searching the plot, but came up empty.

Era is likely the 70s.

Yea, I’m sure I’ve seen the one you are asking about. What could it have been?

Mission Impossible?

Don’t think so. This was a whodunnit, not how can our heroes get the gold.

Hmm… what about that one with the cowboy in NYC? Anyone recall episodes from that show?

McCloud?

Yeah, wondering if that may be it? It had to be one of those 70’s detective shows, but I was never a McCloud fan so I have a hard time believing that’s the one.

Columbo, McMillan and Wife, Streets of San Francisco, Vegas, Hawaii Five-O, Ellery Queen, Scooby Doo, Nancy Drew / Hardy Boys, Hec Ramsey, etc…
.

I’m Starsky, HE’S Hutch.

Who loves ya, baby?

I kinda don’t think it’s Hec Ramsey.

I’m searching each show mentioned at tv.com’s episode guides looking for the keyword ‘gold’. So far, nothing.

What the hell can it be?

Not TV, but a movie…

Sherlock Holmes in New York, with Roger Moore and Patrick Macnee.

Damn. Too late.

Woo-hoo! That’s it!

Now I have a Sherlock Holmes film to track down and watch again!

Sadly I know how it ends… :frowning:

Thanks to everyone for suggestions, and to Trinopus for solving the mystery.

I’m going to have to get that movie, too.

Because of this thread, I re-watched a Mission Impossible episode from the fourth season called “The Double Circle” which uses a similar duplicated floor trick. It’s pretty good, and shows that there are no new ideas in Hollywood.

Never been an M:I fan, but I’ll give that one a look. I’m curious to see what they did with it.

OK, I’m glad I found it, but holy crap, who the hell told Patrick Macnee to talk like that?
