There is a tradition among the military of assigning a man’s name to the enemy. For example, the Germans in World War II were called “Jerry” or “The Jerries”, while the Viet Cong were called “Charlie”. How far back does this tradition go? What are its origins? What are the military folks calling the Iraqis, the Taliban, and Al Qaeda?
I don’t think there’s a “tradition for men’s names” at all, ** vibrotronica**.
“Jerry” derived from the word German, where “Charlie” is from
“Victor Charlie”, the radio-speak for the letters “VC” or Viet Cong.
