Naming the States, I seem to have ended up with too many. Where have I gone wrong?

All 82 Mississippi counties would be a feat, if I knew them all.

I thought he was struck while sitting in Ford’s theater!

Well, this proud childhood resident of “that other place” – West By God Virginia – knows that it’s the tenets of the Constitution that were of concern, and not the tenants.

As do we. Too bad ya’ll Virginians lost custody of the most beautiful scenery in the United States. All we lost was a little bit of beach.

Now, someone name the 55 counties of West Virginia by memory, and I’ll be impressed. I used to be able to do it, but not anymore.

I stand corrected on the spelling, but not on the loss of our lesser half.

A cookie to whoever can guess what order they are in.

Man with the Golden Gun: They’re west to east, aren’t they?

I counted twice and only count 48.

I know Charleston, WV, is missing from your list. Not sure what the other one is.

Man with the Golden Gun: they’re in order of statehood, from most recent, to the original 13 colonies, however, Maine (Augusta) wasn’t actually it’s own state until it separated from Massachusetss in 1820. Also, Vermont (Montpelier) didn’t receive it’s statehood from New York until 1791. And Kentucky (Frankfurt) was part of Viriginia until 1792.

Orinigal 13 colonies:
Rhode Island
New Hampshire
Connecticut
Massachusetts
New Jersey
New York
Delaware
Pennsylvania
Maryland
Virginia
North Carolina
South Carolina
Georgia
Hmmm…but that’s not right, because before Alaska and Hawaii…Arizona was the 48th State. I’ll continue to think this one over…

Also, I noticed an error. The capital of Oregon is NOT Portland…it is SALEM

Well, I’m not seeing any kind of pattern here besides a kind of west-east north-south zig-zagging meandering kinda wadering across the country…

Oh, and the other capital missing is Salt Lake City.

TWO cookies to whoever figures out the sequence here:

Baton Rouge

Impressive, but I haven’t seen anybody memorize all of the counties in Rhode Island yet. Yeah, I’m from Texas and thought that was funny. I’m wondering now if there is a county in Texas smaller than Rhode Island.

Actually, the average county in Texas is just about the size of Rhode Island, which comprises 1045 square miles. Texas has 254 counties spread across its 261,797 square miles. The largest of these, Brewster, covers 6193 square miles and is thus larger than Rhode Island and Connecticut combined. In contrast, Rockwall County takes up a mere 129 square miles of Lone Star State.

I admit to looking this info up in The World Almanac, but I didn’t need to consult any reference in order to name the three counties (Kent, New Castle, Sussex) of Delaware.

Extraneous, you’ve stumped me, I have no idea what order those are in. Try this order, though:

Phoenix, AZ
Indianapolis, IN
Columbus, OH
Austin, TX
Boston, MA
Denver, CO
Nashville, TN
Oklahoma City, OK
Atlanta, GA
Sacramento, CA
Honolulu, HI
St. Paul, MN
Raleigh, NC
Baton Rouge, LA
Lincoln, NE
Madison, WI
Montgomery, AL
Des Moines, IA
Richmond, VA
Boise, ID
Jackson, MS
Little Rock, AR
Salt Lake City, UT
Providence, RI
Tallahassee, FL
Salem, OR
Topeka, KS
Hartford, CT
Lansing, MI
Columbia, SC
Springfield, IL
Albany, NY
Trenton, NJ

Olympia, WA
Concord, NH
Jefferson City, MO
Annapolis, MD
Dover, DE
Juneau, AK
Frankfort, KY
Augusta, ME
Pierre, SD
Montpelier, VT

OK.

Its offical

everyone who has posted in this thread needs to turn off the computer and go get laid. This has just reached nerdyness of biblical proportions!

Not sure if this is a hijack, but I forgot the 5 major boroughs of NYC. About 3 or 4 months ago I tried to remember what they were and could only come up with:

Manhattan
Queens
Brooklyn
Bronx

Umm… there are 5 of them, right?

The first one is Nordrhein-Westfalen.
And you’re missing Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Rheinland-Pfalz, Saarland, Sachsen-Anhalt (as matt_mcl mentioned) and Schleswig-Holstein.

Well, here’s my try at the states of Brazil (from memory):

Roraima
Acre
Pará
Parana
Paraiba
Amazonas
Ceará
Maranhão
Alagoas
Sergipe
Pernambuco
Bahia
Rio de Janeiro
Rio Grande do Norte
Rio Grande do Sul
Minas Gerais
Santa Catarina
Sao Paolo
Distrito Federal
Goiás
Mato Grosso
Mato Grosso do Sul

And now I’ve run out. let me check out how many I missed here.

Oops, I missed:

Amapá
Espirito Santo
Piaui
Rondônia
Tocantins

An interesting trivia fact is that each star on the Brazilian flag represents one of the states, in addition to showing some well-known southern hemisphere constellations.

No, just the four. Some people will try to tell you Staten Island is part of New York City, but it’s actually a reconstituted Soviet Republic with its own parliament and a standing army.

Well it was late, and I was tired, and I don’t do much travelling.

I know most of the US states because of films and TV.

What county is Birmingham in? (knew it was a city, I just thought it’s county was also called Birmingham)

The main county town of Lancashire is Preston, Not Lancaster. (Lancaster is one of the towns, which I realize)

Even though the UK keeps changing its internal divisions, a lot of people who aren’t actually in government still use the pre-1974 counties, the historic ones. The Welsh ones got posted earlier, both only in English. Some of the English counties & cities also havfe Welsh names.

Wales

Brycheiniog (Brecknockshire)
Caerfyrrdin (Carmarthenshire)
Caernarfon (Caernarvonshire)
Dinbych (Denighshire)
Fflint (Flintshire)
Maesyfed (Radnorshire)
Meirionnydd (Merioneth)
Môn (Anglesey)
Morgannwg (Monmouthshire, sometimes officially in England)
Mynwy (Monmouthshire)
Penfro (Pembrokeshire)
Trefaldwyn (Montgomeryshire)

England

Henffordd (Herefordshire)
Caer (Cheshire)
Cernyw (Cornwall)
Dyfnaint (Devon)
Caint (Kent)
Caerloyw (Gloucester)

  • some of the cities

Llundain (London)
Efrog (York)
Amwythig (Shrewsbury)

etc.

Minus points to both of us, then ;). Lancaster was the original county town of Lancashire (hence the name) and Preston is where the county council is based today. Birmingham is in West Midlands, and was in Warwickshire before they invented WM in 1974.

BTW, it’s easy to remember more of the traditional English counties if you follow cricket because all the club sides are counties.

You’re right about the government mucking around with Wales, although it’s mainly for the county level of local government than for postal addresses. I suspect your list would have been OK until 1974 (can Bracken confirm?), but they redrew the whole map of Wales then to form Clwyd, Dyfed, Gwent, Gwynedd, Powys, Mid-Glamorgan, South-Glamorgan and West-Glamorgan. A couple of years back they changed to a system of unitary authorities called:

Isle of Anglesey, Flintshire, Conwy, Denbighshire, Wrexham, Gwynedd, Powys, Ceredigion, Pembrokeshire, Carmarthenshire, Swansea, Neath Port Talbot, Brigend, Vale of Glamorgan, Cardiff, Newport, Monmouthshire, Rhondda-Cynon-Taff, Merthyr Tydfil, Caerphilly, Blaenau Gwent and Torfaen.

Scotland has regions called: Borders, Central, Dumfries and Galloway, Fife, Grampian, Highland, Lothian, Strathclyde, Tayside and Western Isles.

The counties are as follows (although there are also city/town councils at the same level for Aberdeen, Dundee, Edinburgh, Falkirk, Glasgow and Stirling):

Aberdeenshire
Angus
Argyll and Bute
Clackmannanshire
Comhairle nan Eilean Siar
Dumfries and Galloway
East Ayrshire
East Dunbartonshire
East Lothian
East Renfrewshire
Fife
The Highlands
Inverclyde
Midlothian
Moray
North Ayrshire
North Lanarkshire
Perth and Kinross
Renfrewshire
Scottish Borders
South Ayrshire
South Lanarkshire
West Dunbartonshire
West Lothian
The counties of Northern Ireland (not to be confused with Ulster) are easy to remember using the mnemonic FATLAD (or FATDAD depending on your politics):

Fermanagh, Antrim, Tyrone, Londonderry (Derry), Armagh and Down.
