Naming the States, I seem to have ended up with too many. Where have I gone wrong?

Tennessee holds the record for most counties – 95 of them.

Lobsang, I am really impressed with your list! Keep in mind that I told my students once that I would be spending Christmas in Denmark. Some thought it was the capital of Colorado.

Sternvogel has just said that Texas has 254 counties. A lot more than 95.

Uh, Kentucky and its 120 counties would be interested to know that, methinks.

I’m not going to try to name them.

Where on earth did you get that Tennessee-centric number? Just off the top of my head, I know Missouri has 115.

Ummm I don’t know all the counties in Utah. I do remember that Fillmore is the capital of Millard county. One Mormon out of ten zillion with a sense of humor!

Okay heres a story for y’all. I work on a school bus that transports kids with a wide spectrum of disabilities to their respective school. So a couple days ago one of my behaviorally disabled girls was talking about states. She is one of those mini know it alls that REALLY gets on the nerves of us gennywine know it alls  I don’t remember what I said but it was something about the South and she answered with "I haven’t really been there. I have only visited two states there…North and South

DAKOTA!
Oh, yeah she was pissed when I literally fell off my seat laughing and the bus driver had to stop in the middle of the street he was laughing so hard.

Thank God I am getting my son out of Utah schools very soon!

Thanks for the info, because they changed back to Flintshire and Denbighshire from Clwyd, I just assumed that the Government had decided to to mucking around and put things backs as they had found them. BTW: Do you know if Flintshire is still in two bits?

Well I got my list from this .pdf file showing all the unitary authorities of England and Wales as at 2001. It’s only two pages, but takes a little while to load. Flintshire overlaps between the pages but it still seems to be one entity.

The boroughs are Brooklyn, Bronx, Manhattan, Queens and Staten Island. The counties are Kings, Bronx, New York, Queens and Richmond.

I still want an explanation for Wichita. It was a very good go for somone not from here, but Wichita still amazes me.

All I can say is that it’s one of the names that popped into my head. I have no idea how it got there. Probably from a film or something.

It still amazes me when I mention that I grew up in Accrington. People always recognise it, and nearly always their first reaction is to say, with a scouse accent - “Accrington Stanley? Who’r they?!”. Because I grew up thinking it was one of the obscure little dull unfamous towns in the North of England.

Fair enough. I’m a ways from Wichita, but not much. It’s just so small and depressing there. Just curious as to what gave it international fame.

True, though D.C. is by no means a state – even though Congress has officially given up direct rule, it still has absolute veto power over any acts of the local legislature (the D.C. City Council), has some direct control over the budget, and could abolish home rule at its whim. It also tinkers with local law from time to time, most recently (and to local residents outrageously) by refusing to let the District count the votes for a marijuana-legalization referendum.

I remember having to learn all the German states. Seemed kinda pointless, honestly, not to mention that the states are about the size of counties in New Mexico.

This just struck me as unreasonably funny, for some reason. :stuck_out_tongue:

Can any one of the non-Canuck posters here name all 10 Canadian provinces and the capitals??

I’ll have a stab:

Newfoundland - St. John’s?
Prince Edward Island -
Nova Scotia? -
Quebec - Quebec City?
Ontario - Toronto?
Manitoba - Winnipeg?
Saskatchewan - Regina?
Alberta - Edmonton?
BC - Vancouver?
Yukon? -

BLAST! I knew it!!

TO ARMS!! TO ARMS!! We haven’t a moment to spare!! There’s Communism afoot!!

Tripler
Although that does explain a lot. . .

Here’s the correct list, with handy-dandy links. Although you did get some of them right. The Yukon is in fact a territory, though… not a province!

Newfoundland (and Labrador) - St. John’s
Prince Edward Island - Charlottetown
Nova Scotia - Halifax
Quebec - Quebec City
Ontario - Toronto
Manitoba - Winnipeg
Saskatchewan - Regina
Alberta - Edmonton
BC - Victoria
You missed New Brunswick, whose capital is Fredericton.
Bonus points: here are the three territories, as well.

Northwest Territories - Yellowknife
Nunavut - Iqaluit
Yukon - Whitehorse

For more info, go here.

I’ve heard that American schoolkids are taught this song called 50 Nifty United States in school. That still hold true?

F_X

And I can name all the counties of Prince Edward Island!

King’s, Queen’s, and Prince.

whew!
