NaNoWriMo 2006

  1. Up with the pack but only in about fourth place. However my employer kept expecting me to do what he pays me for today, and I’ve been setting up our new PC at home, so I’ve been a little distracted. Still 60% complete before the end of the second week, and I hope to have it mostly cracked by Friday.

Thanks to my internet going down on Saturday (Clerical cock-up on their end), thus losing me access to the NaNo word counter, and thus lessening my motivation AND ability to tell if I’m on-schedule, I’m only at 20k, as of yesterday, and I’m getting frustrated enough that I’m having a hard time motivating myself to write today. >_<

It doesn’t help that my NaNo bears a striking resemblance to Heroes in a couple parts - although it’s coincidental - the main aspect that’s not just a matter of the fact that we’re playing in pretty much the same genre have been in my head since at least January of this year. But that’s not likely to keep some readers from thinking I was ‘inspired’ by the show. (Which is kinda funny, since that’s a theme that’s ended up running through several of the story threads.)

Some of you are wicked over-achievers. braggers! Some of us are content with staying even every day :stuck_out_tongue:

Has anyone else attempted any of the dares in the nano forums?

I did one today, and it does work for my story, so…

Oh. I also decided that my female main character’s name is pronounced “Eyes-lean” mostly because I like it that way. And even if it’s wrong, it’s not as though some people don’t insist on non-standard pronunciations of their names anyway. Ian Ziering, for example.

Done 3 so far. (From the Sci-Fi dares thread in the Science Fiction forum.)

I wish I could find another one that would work for my story so I can squeeze a few hundred more words out.

Heh, that’s such a cop-out - you can put anything into the mouth of someone who’s just woken up suddenly. Nice sentence though!

32,202 unofficially (tho’ in practice Word’s wordcount has agreed with NaNo’s). Crap day at work yesterday and have had new computer delivered at home so I had to find out if I can get M: TW to run OK without having to download a video driver, and that put a crimp in my writing last night. Still, things are slacker today and as soon as I stop procrastinating I have high hopes of turning in a respectable slice.

I went the slow-but-steady route the previous four years. The only problem was, my novel was never finished as 50k. And though I eventually ‘really’ finished them, it took many more months – all the way to August one year! – because the pressure was gone.

So this year I decide a ‘win’ was not just 50k, but actually writing all the way though the last scene and that 40 point “THE END.”

To that’s why I’m pushing so hard. I see my outline, I see how much of it is left…and I put my head down and type.

35,272 right now. Intermediate goals: 40,000 by Thursday night, 45,000 by Saturday night.

I’m falling behind, and likely to fall behind further before the weekend arrives and I catch back up. I just don’t have time the next few days to write more than 1000 words a day or so.

Stupid commitments.

And I think the week two ennui finally hit me last night. Luckily, though, I’m now into week three, so I expect to have a miraculous epiphany any day now. I consider it a sign of my NaNoWriterhood that I did not go back and fix the obviously redundant “miraculous epiphany” in the last sentence.

I’ve kind of given up.

I’m moving to Switzerland, which means a lot of anxiety, while still having very little actual work and the duty to look busy at work - this is the kind of situation where my creativity takes a hike. Actually, one of the triggers to start talking with the headhunters when they called was the realization that Mz Crea wasn’t home.

So I’m still throwing loose scenes at the story when they pop up, but not really expecting to finish, much less to get anything with any kind of sense.

Wow. I agree the flying monkeys they send after slackers are scary, but I’ve never heard of anyone fleeing to a neutral country before. :frowning:

I hope your muse kicks into high gear. Mine revolted yesterday, and flat out insisted that I have a recharge my well day. So, zero word count, but I did read most of book and watched two televisions shows, so hopefully the words will flow tonight.

Not much progress yesterday, and none so far today - busy evening looms but I will try to crank something out. I badly need some plot if I’m going to run on for another 16.5k though.

It’s been a pig of a week for writing, up to my ears in work by day and lots of out-of-hours commitment by night. From a high of nearly averaging 2500 words per day I’ve dropped back to… well, still over 2000, but that means 6500 words have fallen by the wayside somewhere.

For better or worse though it’s now standing at 35936. May see if I have any more inspiration for tonight but it’s getting late. And the last few days of the month will be a killer as well so I’d better not drag my feet too much.

Thought I’d come in to post this Writer Beware blog link.

42,711 words, and Hitler is not dead yet!

I’m planning to surpass 35K today…less than 2000 words to go! Maybe I can even get to 36 or 37K. My one big problem is that I’m going out of town for five days and will have very limited time to work on my novel. So I want to get to 42K or 43K before I leave Wednesday afternoon. I’ll have four days left when I get back here, and it’ll be no problem to push through to 50K.

I’m grasping for more plot, which probably means I need a new story. I’m writing a collection of related shorter stories, which has been working really well for me, but I haven’t had a new story idea in about a week, I’m just working on finishing and beefing up the ones already in progress. Anyone got any good ideas for a story within a fictional autobiography?

Keep that sucker going, you can’t beat a good time-travel story!

About 40,100 unverified (think there are network problems on my “other” computer as I couldn’t post to the Dope either when I tried). Although I’ll need to remember that the last few evenings this month are going to be busy, I like my chances of knocking out the last 10k words with eleven days to do it in.

(Thanks for the tip, Deadly, but there’s no way I’m taking this turkey anywhere near a vanity publisher.)

This weekend’s goal was 40K, and I quit last night at 40,009. Of course, I’ll probably trim about a hundred unnecessary words when I reread and edit later today at work, but I’m in a good position for the Thanksgiving Weekend Push To The Finish, as I do every year. My roommate will be away for five days, I’m turning of the phone, and come Wednesday night, it’s 50K or Bust–with a small time-out to go to Grandma’s and eat too much.

I’m only at 34,989, but I just killed my last Ripper victim.

How the hell did this story become The Dresden Dolls vs. Jack the Ripper, anyway? Ah well. It’s NaNo. What can you do?

43,323 – yippee!
The downside is, being so close rather early, the urgency that has driven me to the keyboard has waned. I only wrote about 500 words yesterday, but found two hours to blow playing a new game. :frowning:
My original goal was to finish by today: daily goal of 2500. Yesterday’s slacking has killed that, no way I can do 6700 word on a word day.
Of course, there’s still the bigger goal of finishing the story. I’ve got at least a half dozen scene before ‘the end’…

Tell me about it. I’ve still got a treasure hunt that hasn’t even begun, an unknown vandal who needs to be caught, three romances to flesh out, and I swear that my original notes had at least two more subplots I can’t even think about right now.

Just once, it would be nice to get to 50K and have the story be more or less finished.

42066, verified. A couple of thousand today has left me with a good feeling about being able to sustain it through the last third of the month, now that I have only 800 words a day to find. Probably about four more stints to finish it which means I should be looking at completion by the time I hit Friday. I always figured I’d either make it with room to spare or not at all.
