I fell last week and broke my L-3 Vertibrae. It sucks. My Orthopaedist gave me a script for Vicodin. I took one on Monday night. I was stoned for HOURS- very uncomfortable feeling. ( I’m not a stranger to being stoned, from my high school days but this was worse). I took one more on Tuesday morning.
It’s Wednesday afternoon, and I am STILL feeling a bit out of it. Now, I’m not stoned but I am losing numbers and words. I went for an MRI this morning, and mis-quoted my goddamned Soc Sec. #.
So, no more Vicodin for me ! A couple of questions for the Teeming Masses with Degrees in Pharmacology: Will these effects fade quickly? Will I ever remember my social security number easily? Is it safe for me to drive yet? Does one become addicted to narcotics SO fast, that the second Vicodin was SIGNIFICANTLY less powerful-feeling than the first, because I’d gotten past what my friend amusingly called my “cherry high” ???
And, back pain aside, why do I feel so FUNKY? I want this shit OUT of my bloodstream pronto. How long until it’s flushed and gone? I took two pills each one was 500TA ( whatever that is, I’m used to seeing Mg. dosing.)
Any input from our chemicaly inclined Dopers ( ahem ) will be surely appreciated. Also, can I just kind of avoid surgery and fix this with homeopathic medicine? <Small grin, not a serious query>

To answer one possible posting in advance, I’ve already considered the idea that this may be the result of a TIA, or other transient cerebral event. All evidence points against that so far.
I’m an editor at a medical publishing house, and here’s what the drug reference we use sez. BTW, Vicodin is a mixture of acetaminophen and hydrocodone, the info below is only about the hydrocodone.
It looks like I’m the only addict on duty tonight,I’ll do the best I can.The reaction you had to the Vicodin probably won’t happen again. After the first dose the effect will not be as strong as it was, even if you stop taking it now and start taking it again a month from now.I’ve been on and off Narcotics for 3 years, right now I’m on Morphine round the clock, plus I take up to 10 extra strength Vicodin a day for break through pain,I don’t even get light headed.I am able to quit,on my own,up till about 5 weeks, after that I need to be medically detoxed, which is just being put to sleep in the Hospital for 2 days.Detoxing yourself is hard the first time after that it’s easy.If you take 1 Vc every 4 hrs cut it to 3/4,the next day 1/2 etc.,it is even easier if you do it every 2 days.On the last day my doc gives me Valume for 2 more days.No sweat!(ok,just a little).Good luck.
and it didn’t seem all that strong. I mean it definitely helped with the pain but I didn’t feel stoned by any means.
I switched to extra-strenght Tylenol on the second or third day and was fine.
On the other hand I once had something called ‘oxycodone’
for a cough associated with a very bad case of flu, and that
one was a stone groove! I could see how addicts get lured
into the life, but I’ve also heard, as someone posted above, that you do get used to narcotics fairly soon then
the “high” really isn’t there. So maybe the same pharmacological mechanism which builds tolerance (and addiction) in the recreational addict is what allows the
therapeutic user of narcotics to adjust over time to the
side effects.
Ahhhhhh nothankyouverymuch. I flushed them all this morning. I have a wife who indicated an interest in using them for cramps ( oye god ). I’m a BIG believer in NEVER sharing drugs. Of course, now they’ve become a part of the town’s water supply. Hee hee…god knows what will happen next.

p.s. MRI reveals no soft tissue damage, only the badly fractured vertibrae. 6 weeks in a brace, some PT and I should just be right as rain.
