NASCAR silliness in Kansas (with Carl Long)

This story popped up in a sidebar on the AP site today. If I was still watching NASCAR I’d have to start rooting for Mr. Long.[

I’m really curious as to what those “rules governing sponsorship and paint schemes” are, tho. :dubious:

The rules are whatever Brian France wants them to be.

Carl Long has been eating a NASCAR shit sandwich for years. In 2009 he was suspended for 12 months and fined $200,000 because his engine was 0.17 inches over regulation displacement. Being a small team he was unable to pay the fine so NASCAR would not allow him to race. The team folded but he was still liable for the fine. He tried to get work with other teams in a support role to earn money to pay the fine but in 2012 NASCAR banned him from the garage area. For whatever reason NASCAR has finally agreed to work with him to get the fine paid and they have finally allowed him to race again. After 8 years of BS.

For those unfamiliar with NASCAR engines 0.17 cubic inches is approximately 0.0004% oversized. This could be the result of wear on an overworked engine. It definitely did not give him an advantage. And for this NASCAR levied the largest fine to date against him.

This story sounds odd. Did somebody have it out for him?

Oh, I know. It’s one of the reason that I gave up watching. Brian France is not only a jackass, he’s a clueless jackass. He’s destroying his own cash cow.

Lucas Oil Off Road Truck Series ftw!

From the link in the OP:

Aye; somebody doesn’t like him much. No idea why, but it sure seems that he’s got the deck stacked against him.

Oh, and my crack about seeing the rules is partially about how I think it’s hilarious that NASCAR would appear to be shying away from having a marijuana company sponsor a car, yet they have historically embraced both alcohol and tobacco as sponsors (remember kids, it was the Winston Cup for 32 years).

They’re okay with sponsoring drugs, even drugs that kill thousands of people a year… but not with marijuana, even tho it’s legal now where they are racing.

:smack:

Scratch that; it’s not legal in Kansas yet. It is legal in Colorado, where the sponsor is located.

I wonder what they’ll do here in Las Vegas? Prolly the same with the rationale that because it’s still illegal at the federal level, broadcasting advertising in the form of sponsor decals across state lines would somehow be improper.

Just another thing that will look silly and petty in 20 years.

Okay, turns out it’s Long’s fault–at least he’s accepting blame. This Jalopnik article explains it better than I could. Remember kids, when submitting an application to NASCAR make sure you correctly spell your sponsor’s name!

Thanks for that link, Cell Guy! Mr. Long comes across as affable and genuine and the Veedvorks CEO sounds like someone I’d be glad to have on my side.

And the insignificant Pot dealing company loses it’s tiny logo nobody would notice on a nothing car that would never been shown, and end up with an AP story and some web articles out of the situation.

Well played Mr. VeedVorks, well played indeed.

Not to mention that NASCAR has its origins in illegal bootlegging.

Sometimes Good triumphs over Evil in unexpected ways!

I don’t think it was just him, but small “start-and-park” teams in general. The larger teams would have been able to pay Long’s fine out of pocket change.
