I think it’s funny how the gender roles are turned around. She’s dying to get laid by her QB boyfriend, but he’s holding out until marriage, so after- what- two weeks of dating?- she proposes to him. I guess it’s only partly so he’ll agree to take her to bed and partly to tweak her nose at her future MiL, but it’s a turn on the age-old trope of horny guy/chaste girl/rushed marriage proposal/sexy times.
Last night after the 2nd or 3rd time when he pushed her off, my wife said “what, not even oral, or a hand job? Sheesh!”
My take on it is that it’s completely in character – she wants what she wants when she wants it, without any thought whatsoever of whether she’ll want it in ten minutes or not – or whether there might be better ways to get it. Completely in line with the nail-polish shoplifting thing. She wants to fuck this guy, and, by god [sic], she’s gonna do it.
The genuineness of whether she enjoys spending time with the QB’s family – I think she’s enjoying playing that role, but I don’t know that it would/will amuse her for more than five minutes.
As for whether she will or won’t go through with the wedding – as corkboard says, there are other things that she could be emoting about in the car. If she does, fine, we can watch the marriage fall apart immediately after she’s done sucking the life force from him. If she doesn’t … also fine, I have confidence in Callie Khouri that the fallout will turn out to be interesting.
I’m sure the show doesn’t want to pay any NFL licensing fees, but it’s a little odd that in all the scenes with this QB that neither he nor his family nor anyone else ever displays any team memorabilia or mentions the name of his team.* I suppose it should be assumed that he plays for the Titans but it’s just unnatural that it ever comes up. The Titans are pretty big news around here, even when they’re playing poorly.
*unless it appeared in this week’s episode, which I haven’t watched yet
Agreed: I was ready to smack her a little after the last episode. And am I the only person in the world who doesn’t like her voice? I’m fine with the voices of everyone else on the show, but whatever it is about her voice that makes it unique also makes it barely listenable (to me). I can’t imagine listening to more than two songs in a row by her, let alone an entire album.
i’ve tried to get into this show because my cousin works on the crew, but it’s just not my thing. i’m glad people seem to be liking it though. he’s thrilled it got picked up for a full season.
Was there any new material shown last night, or was it all clips from the first half of the season? And did they show “If I Didn’t Know Better” or “Fade Into You”? Because if not, I can wait until the next new episode.
Pure clip show, replete with portentous narration. Only clips of songs, or songs played as background over clips and narration. Did a fairly good job of summarizing the story lines, but completely unnecessary for anyone who’s been watching and has a decent memory.
I’ve caught up with the series over the past week and a half (it was sitting in my DVR unwatched) since there weren’t any other shows on and quickly got hooked. I’ll be sticking with this one going forward.
Quick question on this:
I’m not anywhere near the music business, but I’m not sure how Avery’s guitar flourishes killed the deal here. The group was listening to the song with an eye to performing it, so they wanted to get a sense of the songcraft, how it would sound, etc. But they weren’t interested in that specific performance. If they liked it all the way through until the guitar solo (which was at the end of the song), I don’t understand how they’d just walk away. Wouldn’t they just not record the guitar solo?
I’m not in the music business either, but my impression was the demo was supposed to have been as stripped-down as possible so that the buyers could get a sense of how they themselves might want to build on it. Avery’s “flourishes” (good word for it) ruined any chance they may have had for that initial appreciation (and he went off-script more than just the solo, adding embellishments throughout). Never get a second chance at a first impression and all that – his playing distracted the buyers from the song itself and possibly even colored their notions of how to play it, so they decided to pass (can’t unring a bell). Perhaps it was a bit harsh, but remember Nashville is a town where aspiring songwriters and songs are a dime a dozen.
Not a bad episode, but I have a couple of questions. Maybe the hiatus created gaps in my memory after all.
What the hell is Deacon’s problem? Is he all pouty because Rayna is going on tour without him? Regretting that he decided to join a rock 'n roll band? Was he drinking wine in bed or water out of a goblet? I’m assuming water or the reporter friend would have said something. Still not sure what crawled up his ass and died though.
What the hell is Gunnar’s problem? The last thing I remember is that he kissed Scarlett. I think she said she needed time to think about it or somesuch. Anyway he was being a whiney bitch, although I guess he got over it by the end of the episode.
I liked stuff with Rayna and her husband, though. And I felt bad for Mr. QB.
Deacon’s surprised that Rayna is touring at all, much less with Juliette (whom she supposedly hates), and yes, he probably is a bit hurt that neither Rayna nor Juliette asked him to tour with them (though they both know he’s touring with The Revel Kings, so that shouldn’t have been an issue - but still). I think he definitely is regretting the decision to join the band, as he doesn’t seem comfortable with the trappings at all (the “primping,” the photo shoot, the publicity), not to mention the instructions on how to perform from his buddy. Didn’t catch the bit with the goblet, but yeah, I’d guess it was water, not wine.
Well, he feels rejected by Scarlett, and she is his true love. Wouldn’t argue that he’s being whiny about it, though. Harley’s talk probably helped him overcome that.
And yeah, Teddy actually came across as a much stronger character in this episode. Thought it was a bit of a surprise that he already knew Maddie was not his, and an even bigger surprise to see him stand up to Lamar. Quarterback dude is in for a real letdown.
I had the same question about what Deacon was drinking. God, I hope he’s not using again.
The reporter friend looked way too young to be someone he’d had whatever kind of relationship 14 years ago.
Yeah, the Gunnar/Scarlett thing isn’t making a whole lot of sense to me either.
Loved they way they handled Rayna and her husband – esp. when he stood up to Rayna’s father. (Did Rayna know that he knew that Deacon was the younger daughter’s father?) I think it was very true to Rayna’s character, that she’d be that pissed but that she’d recognize the husband’s (and why can’t I remember his name?) relationship with their daughters.
Glad they’re moving briskly with the Juliette and the QB story, while staying true to her character. Did not see the final scene coming, but it totally makes sense – and I actually kind of respect her for it. Well, not how she handled it, but that she’d decide not the make it a “real” marriage, since it shows a certain level of self-awareness in knowing that it’s not.
Apparently Teddy accuses Rayna of exactly that next week, so we’ll see (I guess) if there’s any truth to it. Seems like QB served his purpose, in that he forced Juliette to recognize her selfishness, but I wouldn’t be surprised if he popped back up at some point.
Wondering how long it will take for Deacon to join the tour now that he’s free (and that blowup would have happened with or without Scarlett), and Liam already said he wouldn’t be there long term.
I’m sick of Scarlett. I actually prefer the political plot storylines (which are awful. I was hoping he’d lose so that they could write off that entire section of the plot) to anything to do with her. I prefer Avery’s current storylines to hers. (When she described someone who attempted to rape her as having “bad manners” - I don’t even have words for dialog that bad.)
The way they handled the Juliette/QB story tells me (confirms) that they don’t know what they’re doing. Obviously, that wasn’t a marriage that was built to last for decades or even weeks, but there was room for solid stories both in watching the marriage break and then in watching the divorce/annulment happen. QB’s mom was a good character, they could have had fun with her going after Juliette.
I still think the show has potential, if they can figure out what to do with it.
