Why is Squeeky McBlonde such a mouse? Convict brother is here and gone? Just when Rayna needs a new guitarist? (Despite Deacon being between professional engagements at the moment.)
JailBro played a pretty good guitar for being stuck in the pokey for the last eight years. Do they have a musical instrument lending library in prison?
I liked how Rayna’s new producer/guitarist called her on her efforts to turn him into Deacon, whether she realized it or not- “the boots didn’t work. I clicked my heels together three times, and I still didn’t turn into him” (paraphrased).
Good episode last night. Liked seeing something from Juliette besides angry brat – and I really liked that song. Glad they’re moving ahead on Rayna’s marriage, though the near-miss between Deacon and Teddy was a little cheesy. (And please, god, don’t let it turn into a cliched misunderstanding thing with Deacon next week.) Scarlett continues to be my least-favorite character, and that whole strand of the story continues to feel tacked on and not well thought through.
I had the same thought regarding the Deacon/Teddy/Rayna situation; I’ll be disappointed if that turns into a sitcom-style misunderstanding. The next bit of drama there is what happens to the children in the divorce, and whether or not paternity becomes an issue. (Speaking of which, we’ve seen both Rayna and Teddy acknowledge that, but I wonder if Deacon is aware . . . )
Avery continues to be a whiny entitled idiot, and I was glad to see Gunnar get the best of him – but how bittersweet for Gunnar to spit “We’re not sleeping together!” at Avery, when everybody knows damn well he’d like to be.
I think they’ve been developing Juliette’s character pretty well throughout; she’s still a bitch, but she’s slowly becoming more aware of the limitations of her managed career, and is obviously yearning to be better. Unfortunately, she still doesn’t really seem to be a sympathetic character at this point.
Agree with the above - when the credits rolled I thought “hey, that was a good episode.” I like that things are static - Teddy’s manned up and realized that Rayna’s never going to love him like she loves Deacon and done the right thing. I think Deacon’s been a shit to her lately but I cut him some slack for his heart being broken.
I didn’t think Scarlett was as bad this week; she stood up to Avery pretty well at least.
And they just might turn Juliette into a sympathetic character yet. She seems remorseful about the shoplifting and the marriage and ready to create a more mature image for herself; let’s hope her entourage lets her.
Yep. Liked Juliette’s song and the direction that plot is going (even though it was ridiculous that Juliette wouldn’t know how to use twitter herself). Liked the movement with the Teddy-Rayna-Deacon triangle (and that kiss!). Liked seeing Avery getting punched (even though Gunnar and Scarlett still annoy me both separately and together).
Altogether a move in a good direction for the show.
That song, Consider Me, was co-written by Brendan Benson, of the Raconteurs, Jack White’s band after the White Stripes, with the hit Steady as She Goes…
They really do a great job with the music on this show…
I fast forward through the Scarlett-Gunnar-Avery scenes. I just do not care about any of them. And Scarlett’s voice is like nails on a chalkboard.
I don’t think Deacon knows he’s the father of one of Rayna’s daughters. My guess is that she found herself pregnant just as he was entering rehab for the zillionth time. She probably felt scared and alone and that’s why she married Teddy.
Anyone else still watching? I am digging all the soapy goodness of this show – can’t wait to see what happens now that Teddy is running his own life. (Putting his GF on staff: bad idea. Appointing Coleman deputy mayor: good idea, but that could go horribly wrong. Crossing Rayna’s father: oh, man, can’t wait to see how that works out for him.)
I’m not a country music fan – I gather a bunch of real stars had cameos at Deacon’s party?
And do you think we’ve seen the last of the QB, or is that going to come back and bite her in the ass now that Juliette has fired her manager?
Also not country music fans, but my SO and I watch this gooey soap regularly.
Surprisingly liking (some of) the music as well.
Ratings have dipped as of late, but I think it will hang in there for another season.
Still not quite working for me. It’s getting better, but the connections between the political story and the music story are getting scarcer and if they come back next season and drop the politics altogether, I won’t be disappointed.
I’m only barely above vaguely aware of country music. But yes, there were honest-to-goodness famous people at Deacon’s party.
I have nothing to say about the episode, but I liked it for the most part. And I’ll probably be buying a copy of the “Pour Me Something Stronger” song.
Yeah, I hear you on the lack of connection between politics and music – but I actually think treating it as a separate story could work, because there are all those connections between the politicians and the musicians – e.g., Coleman being Deacon’s sponsor.
I’m still watching it and enjoying it pretty much - actually more than my other soapy pleasure, Dallas. Although since I live in Nasvhville I’m not exactly unbiased.
I’m not a big follower of country music, but I recognized Vince Gill. I’m sure the older dark-haired woman was Someone but I don’t know who. I’d be surprised if Brad Paisley wasn’t there, since his wife Kimberly Williams-Paisley plays Ted’s girlfriend Peggy.
I’m still watching it. One weird little thing I noticed was that when Gunnar dropped the pistol on the floor, Scar picked it up and opened the cylinder to see if it was loaded. I guess it was just interesting that Blondie had gun handling skilz.
Or maybe I didn’t see what I thought…I tend to watch with one eye on the TV and one on the internet.
The older woman was Pam Tillis a second generation country music star.
There’s a new episode tonight – looks like (spoilered for those who don’t watch previews)Rayna and Deacon are going to get back together.
They showed a rerun last time I watched. In it the ex-boyfriend of the blonde girl (that’s singing with Gunner) was in a guitar shop buying a Stratocaster. Two questions:
- Was that Gruhn’s?
- Who was the older guy he spoke with in the store? Was that a character or a cameo by a real country musician or singer?
twickster, your powers of spoiling need some work.
River Hippie, I haven’t seen that episode since it aired the first time, but I think was Watty White, a very influential music producer who is friends with Jayna.
I am pretty sure it was Gruhn’s - which by the way, has announced it is moving to get a bit of distance off the main touristy district - too many looky-loo’s pulling super-pricey guitars off the stands, apparently.
That’s Waddy White, a character played by JD Souther - who is a very big deal in real life. He was part of the Laurel Canyon crew - Joni, Jackson Browne, CSN and the Eagles. He was Glenn Frey’s partner in a pre-Eagles band and co-wrote songs like Take it Easy. JD Souther is very much The Real Deal. Another example of Nashville’s Music Consultant, Callie Khouri’s hubby T-Bone Burnett, is so incredibly well-connected it’s not even funny…
Last night’s show was okay - decent/good music, as always, but the soap-opera twists seem a bit forced and obvious. But I am not a night-time soap guy, so I am not the target demo at all. But the music is so good, and the way the music biz is presented - and the very cool guitars they use - will keep me coming back.
Oh, and more guitar geekery / inside baseball: So, Deacon’s character is portrayed as one of the top players in Nashville. The equivalent, say, of Vince Gill (before he established a solo career, he was the top in-demand session player) - who they’ve had in at least one episode, talking with Deacon.
Anyway, so a Nashville guitar slinger - as a completely debatable rule of thumb - would be most likely to play a Fender Telecaster - or, at least, a Tele would be a go-to guitar. Establishing your guitar cred in Nashville requires that you have solid chops on Tele - “chicken pickin” country style guitar was established on a Tele. I want to say Vince Gill played on one ep(?) - if so, pretty sure it was a Tele. (Vince has an AMAZING guitar collection, but one of his most famous go-to guitars is a 1952 “blackguard” Tele).
Deacon’s character, however, is a Gretsch guy - he plays a Gretsch Jet with Juliette for the most part and at the store gig she played last night that led to a riot was an early '60’s Gretsch Chet Atkins. It’s a way to communicate to geek-insiders that Deacon walks his own path - some really great players use Gretsch (like, say, Chet Atkins for decades before moving back to Gibson), but they are not considered typical.
Sorry - it is very trivial, but seeing that type of stuff just makes me grin when I watch the show…
