Man, seriously. I’m just gonna say “good job” to whoever cut the promos for putting together such a well-crafted bait and switch.
Definitely kind of a soapy episode, but I like that they keep moving the plot ahead: in a daytime soap, each of the story lines would have taken weeks to cover that much ground. I’m okay with all of it except the Juliette turn-around: I hope to god she backslides again because that was a hell of a whiplash 180 on her attitude.
Little blonde hick-chick is quickly turning into the poster child of abusive spouse/girlfriends.
Seriously - sleeps with her dude who then sort of blows that off, goes off on his tangent and screws up their big chance for fame and fortune for some half-assed plan to walk into a biker bar to revenge his brother. Exactly how needy is she? And now that she has “made it”, you just know she will do everything to help him make it too…geez, get a life, girl.
Deacon singing “Black Mascara Tears” as a last ditch attempt to calm down the “not a practical gift” puppy was adorable.
ETA: And I love that he named the puppy “Sue.” Who doesn’t know that song? What’s wrong with her?
Vet: Did you name your dog yet?
Deacon: Yeah, Sue.
Vet: Sue? But your dog’s a boy.
Deacon: Yeah! A Boy Named Sue!
Vet:
Deacon: You really don’t like country music, do you?
Just thought I’d share that the girls who play the young daughters on the show are Lennon and Maisy Stella, who are, in my humble opinion, incredibly talented, and they have their own youtube channel: lennonandmaisy - YouTube
Their parents are Brad and Marylynne Stella, who are the Canadian country duet The Stellas.
(I hadn’t heard of them before hearing about the girls, either)
Yanno, this is the show I wish Smash could have been – the plotting is soapy, but it moves right along, and the characters are basically believable.
I liked that Juliette almost immediately went back into obliviously selfish after her epiphany last week. Also like that she gave her mom the shout-out.
I liked Deacon’s relationship with the vet (except how the hell could a professional just pick up and leave town for a few days?), esp. when he fucked up, she called him on it, and he owned it. All of that struck me as very true of someone in recovery who’s new at the whole intimacy thing.
And I liked that Scarlett was acting like Gunnar was Avery on the contract thing, and that they straightened it out. Again, that felt authentic to me, in terms of her emotional dynamics. (Have we met her mother, since this show is all about mothers and daughters?)
Has it been confirmed whether or not this has been renewed for next year? I sure hope so, I just get more and more into it.
Didn’t catch the show last night - I have it DVR’d for this weekend - but glad to hear the girls get to sing again. Also just wanted to give this thread a little bump to keep the show on the radar.
Mindreader! I came here to say the exact same thing.
While both are somewhat musical soap operas, Nashville has keep one foot in reality while Smash has shuffled off to Buffalo and strangled to death on cliches.
Whodathunk the Nashville hicks could do a better job of portraying NYC in one episode than Smash has done in two seasons?
The complexity of the plotting just blows me away – Lamar is starting to feel a lot less tacked on, and the revelation that Waddy was the mother’s lover was like, well, of course – and I’m impressed with how well that has been set up with minor references throughout the whole series. This is not plotting on the fly, people, this is setting up the entire season in advance and then dealing the cards one at a time.
Is Gunnar going to be the Deacon to Scarlet’s Rayna?
What do we think of the new neighbor? I suspect he’s about to do something sleazy like pinch numbers he shouldn’t have from Scarlet’s phone. Or is it just going to be a standard soap opera love triangle?
How long before Juliette sleeps with Avery and records one of his songs so he can thumb his nose at all the “you’ll never work in this town” people?
If a tour in New York needs another Roadie wouldn’t they hire one from there?
Will Juliette lure Dante off the wagon?
You’d think Rayna would hook her own sister up with her colorist.
What is Dante’s game? He’s going to rob Juliette blind, or set her up for humilation just you watch.
How long until Cowboy Will hits on Gunnar? I don’t think Cowboy Will is closeted, but I thought the right moment arrived after they put Scarlett to bed and took off for a “Boy’s Night.”
I am surprisingly interested in Avery now. He seems very real and I want to see where things go for him. The character is growing and changing. Corn-pone Barbie still annoys me, though, and I don’t see her growing on me in the same way.
Well! Deacon and Reyna back together, for tonight at least. Dante turns out to be an fraud- I knew he was just a bit too smug to be legit. And Cowboy Will hits on Gunnar, so **Dr. Fidelius **nailed that one, too. The last three episodes of the season should be pretty interesting. Has it been renewed, does anyone know?
I’ve been getting a gay vibe from cowboy since he first showed up. I have no cite, but every week I’d mention it to my wife. Last night when they were sitting next to each other on the couch, at the exact same time my wife said “guys aren’t supposed to sit that close” and I said “just kiss him, already”, and a couple seconds later, they did.
I’m glad Juliette got screwed over by Dante, but her poor mother! Just send your assistant to tell mom she doesn’t have to go back to the hospital.
And finally, Rayna and Deacon stop dancing around and own up to their true feelings. And oh, by the way Deacon, Maddie is your daughter.
Mostly a good episode - moving along at a good clip with story lines and not dragging them out forever.
I am really starting to get annoyed by the long, eternal suffering Scarlett (aka Future Resident of Women’s Shelter)…that girl could suck the air and joy out of anything. Far from feeling sorry for her, now I just sorta wanna see her get fired and spend the rest of her life mopping floors at the Dairy Queen. Actually, she is kind of a medical miracle - I mean, how can she even stand up straight without a spine in her body?
On the flip side of that coin, the lovely Juliette (aka Leap Before You Look Lady) is now the official magnet for creeps and crap. You would think that girl could learn something along the way - in comparison, Lindsay Lohan looks like a sane woman on a great career path.
Sorry to see Brokeback Mountain boy get shut down by clueless, stubborn boyfriend of above mentioned downer chick, Scarlett. At least Brokeback Mountain boy would be good for the dude’s career.
Still - the writers on this show, unlike the writers of Smash, have a great flair for moving their plots along and putting some oomph into the story.
I find the soap-opera elements a bit hard to take, but the actors do their best with what they have. The Rayna/Deacon will-they-or-won’t-they has been silly, but when Rayna showed up at Deacon’s door, I enjoyed watching Connie Britton make it work.
The song Gunnar sang was good - I continue to find the music a compelling reason to watch the show, and end up enjoying some of the performances as a result…
