Saw it on DVR. Yeah, that was funny. The soap opera continues - obviously Avery won’t be gone from Hayden/Juliet’s crew for long - Rich Guy and Juliet will get in trouble and Avery will be there to Save the Day™. But yeah - Teddy’s not-pregnant gal and Rayna’s suddenly missing voice - classic soapiness. Whatever - as long as the overall music vibe is there - the songs remain solid.
Guitar Geek aside: Nicely done with the Rich Guy’s guitar. A 1952 Gibson SJ (Southerner Jumbo) is a great guitar, and I believe is one of the guitars Hank Williams did play. Rich Guy claiming to have purchased it, and then referencing the fact that Neil Young owns a Martin D-45 that was Hank’s is good geekery (fwiw, it is not clear that Neil’s Martin really was a main player of Hank’s, but by now the fact that Neil has played it for decades kinda renders that moot).
I know nothing about guitars and little about country music history, but Avery sold me with his expression when he was handed the guitar. It might not mean anything to me, but it sure meant a lot to him.
Well, Hank Williams is a Country Music God™ of course. Two of his guitars are in the Country Music Hall of Fame - a Martin D-18 and I think a Martin D-28. From a geek standpoint, the Gibson SJ* and Neil Young’s D-45 are up there with Clapton’s Strat Blackie, or Hendrix’ Woodstock and Monterey Pop Strats, etc. as Holy Grail instruments.
IRL, Microsoft’s Paul Allen bought Hendrix’ Woodstock Strat and CLapton’s Layla Strat, Brownie - he displays them at the Experience Music Project in Seattle, but takes them out every now and then. Imagine being with Paul Allen and him just saying “here, wanna try it?” I would just plotz**!
So yeah, if Avery was at that gig and got handed Hank’s guitar - it would be a huge thing.
*fwiw, I have an old Gibson similar to that one. A J-45 - the slightly-less-blingy version of that SJ. The ones from the 40’s and early 50’s are wonderful, wonderful instruments if you find a good one - Gibson acoustics are known for being a bit inconsistent back in the day
**“Plotz” = yiddish for “freak out with big emotion - anger, frustration, amazement, astonishment, etc…”
When Rich Guy was onstage with the band, was Avery purposely trying to play over him? Seemed like it was RG’s moment to play a little and Avery jumped in with the Tele and drowned him out. Maybe I was just imagining that.
Hmm, I’d have to see it again. I saw Rich Guy strumming and Avery playing his planned lead. Rich Guy didn’t seem to be that good to play lead on his SJ.
When I’ve had noob guests sit in, rhythm is the place to start. Seemed authentic.
I’m definitely not going to argue that the whole Deacon/crash storyline isn’t soapy goodness, but I find it totally believable that being intubated could have damaged her vocal cords (not just having the tube, but also when someone isn’t breathing the medical types don’t tend to worry about being gentle).
I heard (saw, actually, since it was online) a vicious rumor today that this show is getting canceled. (Yet, Two And A Half Men remain.) I hope it’s not true.
Real babies are for amateur soaps.
They have the fake pregnant woman with the fake baby that’ll be fake stolen! I bet she gets amnesia.
I miss the music from last season. I bought “Fade Into You,” “Wrong Song,” and “Pour Me” as soon as they were available. Nothing this year has made me want to go buy it.
I’m beginning to get concerned that the music is going to go downhill with T-Bone Burnett’s departure.
Here’s what stuck in my craw – that Scarlett and her pal (whose name, apparently, it would behoove me to learn) sang a Motown classic for their karaoke offering. The song was a hit not only before Scarlett was born (c. 1990?), but probably before her mother – who never listened to anything but country – was born (c. 1970?). At the time I was thinking it should be something by the Bangles or a similar group, till I realized even they were too early. Girl groups of the '90s/'00s – who would that be? The Spice Girls? Destiny’s Child? I don’t even know – which is why the song choice annoyed me. Clearly the new music person was pandering to my generation, and not actually choosing something Scarlett and her pal would have chosen to sing.
Good point.
Their mothers would have listened to country-pop (Shania Twain, Trisha Yearwood, Faith Hill), or the things from when they were slightly younger teenagers (Carrie Underwood, Gretchen Wilson), or possibly even “classic country.” But Motown would be right out.
Other than music, good episode. At least crazy pregnant woman is trying to get pregnant, which makes a weird kind of sense. Tandy became interesting. Maddie’s running away was a little over done, but it brought good story points for everyone else. I was happy with those 45 minutes of television.
Which was set off by her instantaneous recognition of her grandmother’s ring worn as a necklace by her father’s fiance. Didn’t look all that distinctive to me.
(FTR, I have had a very long and very annoying week, and apparently I’m taking it out on Nashville.)
Glad to see Deacon might be finding a new relationship.
Why doesn’t Gunnar just kick out the gay cowboy and look for a new roommate? It can’t be that hard to find one, it’s a nice house.
And do you think Gunnar and Avery will end up in a band together?
:: Shrug :: I don’t think it was a reach to have Maddie recognize the ring. Didn’t think her reaction was over the top for a teenager, either, though I was a bit surprised she called Juliette rather than someone else (but then, who else would she call?).
Yep.
Here’s next week’s episode (“Don’t Open That Door”) description (spoiler-boxed for the spoiler-sensitive.):In advance of a benefit concert starring all of Edgehill’s best acts, Label head Jeff Fordham demands that his new artists sell themselves as hot, sexy personas—which is a major struggle for Scarlett, and Layla knows it. Since Rayna is unsure about her future as a singer, she plots to buy out Edgehill’s rights to her music, and Gunnar and Avery decide to record new songs with Zoey, Scarlett’s best friend. However, by the end of the concert night, nothing will be the same.Apparently Scarlett’s friend (whose name is Zoey) will have a bit of a larger role as well.
