Might buy one for a new house. Anyone have a good one and what is the cost?
I’m interested too.
Weber. Pick the one you like. Don’t choose another brand. Go for a Weber, and you’ll be happy.
Dupe. Stupid hamsters.
No particular recommendation but a solid pedestal mounted direct piped grill without a lot of bells and whistles will last a lot longer than anything else. If you want storage space and work tops go get some rubber maid stuff. You’ll enjoy a grill that’s there and ready to go, year round, year after year.
In Canada natural gas is a very common home heating source so lots of people have converted to NG grills for convenience. I’ve had them in our last several homes.
**ANY **grill can be a natural gas grill. NG is lower pressure and all else being equal produces a less hot flame than LP. AFAIK (in Canada) you can buy any new major-brand grills as NG or buy conversion kits. Here, at retailers like Home Depot and Loews it just says next to the display “LP model XXX / NG model XXX”. Here, they’re usually the same price.
The kits mechanically compensate for the temp. differences plus give you the different the physical connection for NG versus the LP tank. Once the unit is converted, neither I or anyone I know has ever experienced any performance difference vs the LP version. Heating temp. and consistency is identical.
My advice is to just get general advice and reco’s for a grill, then before you buy check to verify you can buy it converted or make sure the mfgr sells a conversion kit which you can DIY: Gas Grill: Propane to Natural Gas Conversion (DIY) | Family Handyman
I will refrain from giving you specific model advice, since I don’t feel passionate about any grill. I know others here will fill that roll much better than I can.
I don’t understand why you would want to grill over anything but charcoal. If I wanted to eat food that didn’t taste like it was cooked over charcoal, I’d use the oven and broiler.
I thought the same until I got a propane grill for the deck when we bought our new house four years ago. The biggest thing is that it allows me to cook outside, which makes my wife happy, as certain things I grill have a tendency to stink up the house (like hamburgers with all the fat rendering – I’ll either grill them or do them on a flattop on my grill outside. Roast chicken, too – I like to make it high heat, which smokes up the kitchen.) Also, advantage in not heating up the kitchen in the summer. Also, convenience. I used to be a charcoal purist, but now I really appreciate the propane grill. Plus you do still get a bit of a grilled flavor to it if you’re cooking something with fat in it, as the fat drips down and smokes up and gives the meat that “fat-in-the-fire” grilled flavor.
a pox on gas grills i say !
My Son is the outdoor cook for all us. He grills, smokes and deep fries. He uses charcoal mostly. I have a gas grill. We use it for quickies like hotdogs and brats.
I wouldn’t like to recommend any gas grill as I have no knowledge of different brands.
My point is: Know what you’re gonna be cooking. A steak is just not good over gas. IMO. Hotdogs, burgers are fine.
Charcoal is definitely better. I’m sure you’re using real hardwood charcoal and not simply pretending to be cooking over charcoal with some briquettes.
OTOH, a natural gas grill is set up and ready to go, you don’t even have to make sure there’s enough gas in the tank, and if you’d cook it in the kitchen you can do it outside without making a mess and heating up and smoking up the kitchen. So if you have the time, go start the real hardwood charcoal, but otherwise there’s nothing wrong with cooking on a gas grill.
ETA: And of course real wood is better than charcoal too.
my parents used natural gas outdoors for almost 50 years even in winter on occasion. They did all kinds of meats including steaks. And they were very picky about food. They even made their own pasta at home.
IMHO the one you will use the most is definitely better.
Sometimes. Sometimes the one you use the most is just the most convenient, or least expensive perhaps. OTOH, what I consider the best is the best, as can be said by anyone.
charcoal is nice but you have to buy it , and then dispose of the ashes. Gas much easier to deal with.

Then why are you even responding to a thread about gas grills? Don’t threadshit.
Or look at a combo grill that accepts gas and charcoal. If you’re looking at seriously Gucci grills though check these out, https://www.bbqguys.com/bbq-grills-smokers/luxury-high-end-gas-grills?ff4=37&ff5=326
Also, in response to those die hard charcoal guys I give you this… King of the Hill - Shut Your Mouth - YouTube
I do feel compelled to comment that once again my lack of faith in the SDMB has been validated. Two steps backward. Thanks to **engineer_comp_geek **for weighing in, one step forward.
Bijou Drains asks a good & valid question about recommendations on NG grills and they get shit on and end up having to defend why they’d even want one. And a valid request for advice degenerates into an unrequested and unneeded debate on the pros and cons of NG:mad:.
When Tubadiva and others here ask why they’re losing so many members and why people don’t post often anymore look back at this thread.
I helped my father convert his propane grill to natural gas. Replacing the jets ( orifices ) and the regulator, and a few fine adjustments to the air/fuel ratio. Less smelly than propane, and it works alright; if you like to grill over gas…which is not my personal preference.
Never used a gas grill until I bought my house – it came with a natural gas grill. Its just so darn convenient. I grill a lot, esp. in the summer so I’m not heating the house.
