NBA 2022-23 Season

Note: I am out of the loop completely on NBA right now.

I see a video on reddit of the NY crowd chanting for Derrick Rose to enter the game the other night. I looked him up, figuring he must be a star, but he looks to not be putting up major points for the Knicks.

Is this a joke, like put in the end of the bench guy because we are winning by so much? Or am I just wrong about everything?

Derrick Rose is a former MVP when he played for Chicago. He was looking to be a superstar but has had bad knees throughout his career that literally hobbled him.

Why were they chanting for him, then? A joke or a genuine cheer for him because he’s amazing?

He’s had multiple “comebacks” where he had flashes of his former MVP self, but nobody really expects him to still be that guy after all of the injuries. I think they’re genuinely cheering for him. They’re not relying on him as the centerpiece of the team, he’s basically a garbage minutes guy at this point but he’s contributed at times during the season and has history with the Knicks, and he’s still an inspirational story.

It’s the human victory cigar thing, when a crowd demands a fan favorite bottom of the bench player be put in the game to signify the victory is won.

The Wolves managed to avoid a sweep, but Denver will finish the job at home, I’m sure.

I saw an article in the Portland paper that says Damian Lillard has pretty much thrown down a gauntlet to the team owners/managers. The guy is loyal, and it must take a lot for him to hint at leaving, but he deserves to be on a better contender for a ring. I think even the fans would applaud him moving on, despite the giant hole he would leave in terms of ability and leadership.

And so they did. The Hawks on the other hand pushed Boston to 3-2 on some late game heroics by Trae Young.

Narrow victory, though. It could easily have gone to OT if Edwards had sunk the three. I think MN just ran out of gas late in the game.

The Knicks eliminated Cleveland, and Miami became the first play-in team to ever win a playoff series by handing the top-seeded Bucks their own asses in 5.

Miami New York is gonna be a great series, and I wanna see Jimmy Butler take on Philly in the conference finals.

The Lakers handed Memphis their own asses with a 40 point beat-down to advance in the playoffs. LeBron James walked off the court without the traditional handshakes, basically a rebuke to all the trash talking that’s gone on.

Are the Lakers real contenders, then?

I see their record is not great, but they start the year terrible and improve? I don’t actively follow NBA, but I thought this was the case.

Is this Anthony Davis, the one with the unibrow, a superstar? I though the expectations for him were sky-high when he entered the NBA.

I don’t think the Lakers are on the same level as some of the other contenders, then again I thought Milwaukee was going to win it all. Anthony Davis IS a superstar, though he has not lived up the expectations people had when he came into the league. He is also VERY injury prone, and Lebron is old. Frankly this Lakers team could simply implode at any moment, both Lebron and AD have missed a ton of time due to injury the past three years or so.

As did Golden State, and now they’re poised to perhaps go to the second round. If we want talk about disappointments, Rudy Gobert hasn’t yet shown MN that he is worth all the money they paid for him. Like many big men, he has trouble hanging on to the ball, even though his hands are the size of catchers’ mitts. He works very well with Mike Conley, with whom he’s played before, but Conley is up there with LeBron in age, so his days on the court may be numbered.

Are there any GSW fans here?

Hi guys, I’m jumping in here after the Warrior’s game 7 win last night. In following GSW only casually during the season, it was baffling how they could not win on the road. Going into game 7 in this series, of course on the road, I was really worried. I thought game 5 would be their only road win of the series.

But they came through big time on the shoulders of great performances by Curry and Looney. Those two played like they had hearts of champions, and they did so most of the series. But Thompson, Green, and Poole all continue to underperform, and if that continues GSW won’t go deep in these playoffs. They certainly won’t win it all. That’s not a solid game plan to win another championship.

Sure, Thompson hit some key buckets, both 2s and 3s, but it took him a long time to get started. He was solid on his FTs (while most of the rest of the team, including Curry, surprisingly, left too many points at the line), but more often than not he has bricked it from the field the entire series. His injuries of 2019 and 2020, L ACL and R Achilles respectively, have altered his balance and control on his shots and he may never return to his old form. It’s been over a year since his return in January 2022.

Teams are figuring out how to defend Draymond Green so that he’s not as effective a quarterback that the team has relied on for many years.

Wiggins has to come fully back for GSW to win it all. Will he? He was out for so long. He had a good game 1, but after that he was mostly okay with some moments of brilliance scattered through this series.

Poole has had flashes of brilliance but he mostly makes poor decisions. Driving into the lane crowded with Sabonis and Barnes and Huerter, it’s no surprise to us when he gets rejected or forced to make an errant pass because he’s overcommitted. His shot selection lacks wisdom, but he makes only enough of them that he continues to let them fly, and mostly miss. After with his great performances in last year’s postseason he thinks he still has it. But mostly he doesn’t.

Moses Moody has given some productive minutes. As have Donte DiVincenzo and GP2.

So now they’ve left a young and strong Sacramento team behind, and the Lakers are next with LeBron, Davis and Russell. And they loom large. This will be another good series. I expect it to go 7.

Good analysis. That was a fun series. I think both GSW/Lakers and Philly/Boston (party likes it’s 1983!) could go to 7 as well. I think the Celtics are a better team, though it’s impressive Philly beat them (barely!) even without Embiid. I still think Boston’s slightly better, but we’ll see.

I’ve been saying the Suns are overrated, for a while now. I think Denver will beat them in five (maybe six at the very most).

The Memphis Grizzlies have informed upcoming free agent Dillon Brooks that they will not be bringing him back under any circumstances.

I saw that, but why do they have such a hate on for him? I also see where MN may be looking to trade Karl-Anthony Towns. Not sure what that’s about, unless he’s asking to be on the block.

I’ve been enjoying some playoff games, but I’m really not much of a basketball guy. Never really played it outside of fifth grade after school league. I do understand the rules pretty will but I’m an idiot when it comes to strategies. I’m basically just watching for the amazing athletics; I don’t have what it takes to say, “gee whiz, he should have passed,” or whatever.

The one thing I don’t understand is, what the hell is the BONUS. I see it on the scoreboard and I hear the announcers mention it but … what the hell is it?

After a set number of team fouls (defensive fouls), every successive foul will result in free throws awarded to the other side, whereas before, you would only see free throws awarded if a player was in the act of shooting or had a clear path to the basket. The exact details differ based on whether you’re taking pro or college ball.

I believe in the NBA, the limit is 5, or 2 in the last two minutes of a half.
