NBA Draft 2014

2~3 years from now and the Sixers are going to be a serious handful. I can’t believe how much talent they’re loading up.

I like Payne for the Hawks (I’m still worried, though) but it still doesn’t help Horford move from Center.

I always love it when some team goes completely off the board. In this case, Toronto using the 21st pick on a guy that Ford has ranked #66, with the analysis “There are currently no comments available for Bruno Caboclo.” We’re officially into the crazy picks.

Not just loading up on talent but loading up on talent for later. Neither Embiid nor Saric are going to play for them next year, that’s another year of tanking and another good pick coming up.

Rece Davis just said “calary scap”. This is endlessly entertaining, so much more fun than the NFL draft.

Big dilemma for me next year with Shabazz being in Miami… love UConn and the alumni, hate the Heat, what ever shall I do? If Charlotte had kept the pick they’d immediately have become my second-favorite team in the league, oh well.

If the Heat gave #26, #55 and a 2nd next year for Napier, I’m happy. Especially if they get Hairston at 26.

The 76ers are the team of the future and they always will be. Carter-Williams last year, Noel this year, Embiid next year, Saric the year after that - plus some other draft picks - could be the core of a great young team. Then again, by that time they’ll have to start making bigger commitments to the guys they’ve drafted and things could get complicated. And of course who knows if these guys pan out? They’re not going to win a lot of games right now, that’s for sure.

The Heat caught at least one break: Napier slipped down the board, so they were able to get him for picks alone and didn’t have to trade Norris Cole. I’m not sure if they want to keep Cole or not, but if nothing else they can include him in another trade if necessary. Riley and LeBron both supposedly liked Napier a lot.

Detroit just got the steal of the draft. Mark it down.

Not a bad one. Mine is on the Knicks picking up Early in the second round. He’s good.

Zach Lowe on the Afflalo trade:

For all that talk, there weren’t as many shocks and trades as people expected, and there a lot of picks of international players who won’t be in the NBA for a while. I like the Bulls taking McDermott because they need anybody who can score points. The Knicks and Nets may have done pretty well to get themselves a few picks.

As I get older, I find I’m putting less and less emphasis on the draft. I know that the draft itself is usually the most fundamental event for building a successful team, but in terms of evaluating the picks themselves, there’s so much hidden information that us casual fans aren’t privy to that it’s nigh impossible to say someone got a “steal” or they “reached” or whatever.

As a result, I find the roster management and trading to be way more interesting than the actual players that were selected. (Although Adam Silver drafting Isiah Austin was awesome.)

I watched perhaps the least amount of college hoops ever this year Whats the scouting report on McDermott?

He scored tons of points in college because he’s a very good shooter. Don’t expect much in the way of defense.

I figured with that many points, he can create his own shot. Accurate?

No. He can stroke it, and he’s pretty skilled, but he’s not going to make anything happen on the move.

He’s a white guy
