NBC Premiere: Life

OK, Who watched it? I was hoping it would be good.
Boy was I disappointed.
Was the lead actor trying to get the David Caruso award for over dramatic, bad acting? And what’s up with that stupid head tilt. Is NBC trying to come up with gimmick for him? If that’s it, they blew it big time.

What I’m really upset about is I completely forgot CSI-New York was on. So I was only able to catch the last half hour of that show because of the first 30 minutes I wasted on Life.

Blech.

I liked it just enough that I will watch one more episode in hopes that the lead gets less annoying.

I like the premise enough to stick with it, but I agree that the lead was getting a bit odd with his weird ramblings and peculiar emoting. The troubling part is that I loved him in Band of Brothers where he played the quiet, thoughtful type. Maybe that’s his full range.

Damien Lewis played Soames Forsyte, a (quite sexy) bastard in The Forsyte Saga, and did it marvelously. He’s also a former member of the RSC. There’s plenty more talent than is evident here.

Yeah, the head tilt made him look like an inquisitive cockatiel. Here’s hoping they get those moments ironed out, because I think the plot has potential.

I watched it for Calamity Jane and Aeryn Sun. Aeryn Sun got axed (supposedly she’s preggers), and I didn’t see any of the fire I got from Calamity in the new character. Wednesday has just become [Catch up on Monday day.

I’m getting a not-pleasant Blind Justice vibe out of this, which also had a damaged cop who successfully sued to get rehired and despite his obvious limitations and the contempt of his co-workers (though his female partner who intially felt punished for being saddled with him quickly came around) managed to crack the case every week.

I turned it off halfway through. I’m going to try it again in a few weeks (if it survives). Maybe by then the writers and actors will have settled on to decent character development.

I thought it was a waste of Damien Lewis’s talent. He could have just wholesale copied his Band of Brothers character into this show and it would actually work better than the nutjob he was trying to potray.

I think he was just trying too hard to not be CSI Horatio. Tilting his head was not the way to do that.

Huh, I didn’t even notice the head-tilt.

I liked it well enough – I don’t love it, but I like it and am looking forward to the next episodes. I really like Damien Lewis generally, so I’m hoping I continue to enjoy him in this. He’s the only reason I watched the pilot!

I will give it one more try. :dubious:

It reminded me of Monk and whatever that cancelled Fox show was with the guy who knew everything, with a little Law & Order thrown in. I really hated that they started it with the obligatory scene of the detective arriving at the crime scene and immediately picking out details that the others missed.

The subplot about his frameup could be interesting, plus the subplot with all his money and his ex-con financial advisor. And both he and his lady partner definitely have dark sides. I’ll watch it again and see how it goes.

Damian Lewis is a lot like Jeffrey Donovan. Hopefully he will eventually find a series to fit his personality. I will watch this until it’s canceled. :frowning:

Brynda and I watched this last night (TiVo’s got us all out of order) and we both thought it was pretty good.

I do agree that it is irritating when a “star” character suddenly spots something that no one else sees, but he was the only one who went over to the dog, so I am willing to suspend disbelief a little there.

I like the little touches with Damian Lewis’ character not being up on technology. I think they have room to work with the characters and I like the general plot with him working on his own case in his downtime.

I think we will keep watching and hope it develops the good ideas and irons out some of the wrinkles.
