Need a trouble free Browser (not FireFox) that wil

let me access my Gmail, lets mel use a separate Home Page, and closes all Tabs upon Exit. (Cannot do these conveniently with FFox

I am too inept for Google Chrome, nor do I trust IE. (Hope the latter doesn’t sound pompous.)

OS is XP

Why not?

Since you’ve ruled out three browsers, I guess the only real answer is to check out Opera.

But I would suggest using Firefox for most things and Chrome for Gmail. Then you can create a Gmail application shortcut.

I can do all of those things with Firefox.

I’ve easily customized my home page by navigating to the page I wanted, then dragging the icon for it in the navigation bar to the “home” button.

I can access my Gmail just fine.

When I close firefox, it closes all tabs for me, but at first, there was one pop-up messasge that asked me if I wanted to close all the tabs. I checked the box to never ask this question again, and clicked Yes, then that was it.

Separate from what?

Do you mean when you restart the browser, you don’t want it to reopen all the same tabs? In FireFox, under Tools (in menu bar) -> Options -> Startup, you can select what you want it to open when it starts: home page, blank page, or “windows and tabs from last time.”

Also note that “home page” can be multiple tabs; if you have multiple tabs open when you go to Options -> Startup and clicked on “Use Current Pages” (note plural), all your open tabs get recorded as your home page.

You are on the money!!

I now have 2 tabs - my Gmail and Home Page.

Thank you very very much for your advice, scr4!!!

If I may, what do you mean “too inept for Chrome”? I have been using it since day one and I don’t think there is a browser out there that is simpler than Chrome.

I can’t figure the focking thing out. :D:D:D Honest.

Now that my FireFox is fixed, I’ll stick with it. But when I grow up, and get a PhD, I’ll give Chrome another whack.

If you needed some assistance with those things, I think you would greatly benefit from starting a thread in IMHO asking for other things you can do with Firefox that would make your internet life easier. I’d also go through the Properties toolbox to tinker with things.

I like Opera quite a bit. It does tabs a lot better than FF and has a lot of customization ability. Unfortunately, from version 8 to 9 they “improved” several things which I had to spend some time to fix. (But the address bar is still “improved” just like FF’s.)

I tried Opera, and had it include access to my Gmail. The damn thing started loading my drive with all the Gmail I ever received from around 2 years ago.

I finally stopped it and went back to FF.

I’ll happily listen to anyone on how I can avoid this problem, because Opera seems to be a good browser.

All this shows my total ignorance.

Sounds like you tried to configure Opera’s e-mail client to use Gmail, rather than just accessing the Gmail web interface. You should be able to access the Gmail web interface with Opera, and it should work the same as under Firefox.

(Firefox doesn’t even include an e-mail client. Though a separate e-mail client, Thunderbird, is available from Mozilla.)

So, I could have Opera open 2 Tabs like I (you) had FF do - Gmail and a home page?

Yes. It’s called a “session” in Opera (File > Sessions > Save this session). You can make as many different tab configurations (sessions) as you like and choose between them at startup.
