Need a (very) low-cal snack that makes you thirsty.

I enjoy drinking ice water. I mean, I really enjoy it. If I’m just sitting around doing nothing (like right now), I’ll frequently nosh on whatever snack food we have lying around the house, not so much because I’m hungry or I enjoy the food, but because I like having my thirst quenched by a large cup of ice water.

The problem, of course, is that this habit leads to my ingesting a lot of junk food when I’m not even hungry. So, does anyone have some suggestions for what I might keep next to the computer that won’t make me fat but will let me enjoy big gulps of cold water? Thanks in advance.

Salted popcorn? There are some microwave popcorns that contain very little fat and few calories, but boy do they make you thirsty! Of course, if you’re on a sodium-restricted diet, you don’t want to eat this stuff.

Celery sticks (with a little salt sprinkled on top, if necessary). Celery seems to be a salty vegetable, unlike carrots or any fruit, at least to me. Radishes would work, too.

Peanut butter and Saltines…

Popcorn is going to be the winner, but let me also suggest pickles. In fact, pickles and popcorn is actually a good combination, especially if the pickle is a nice garlicy dill. There used to be a restaurant in Chicago that put fresh popcorn and a crock of pickles on every table.

Lemon salt. You can get it in packets, but it’s easy enough to make yourself.

Cigarettes.

Why not just drink the water?

Are there any two foods that have more calories?

Doh! I forgot the low-cal part…

Well, I hate pickles and dislike celery, so those are out.

Delicious, but that’s just the sort of snack that’s problematic for me.

Never heard of it – is it just what the name implies? Anyway, I had something that was more food than condiment in mind.

Because if I’m not thirsty it’s not fun. If I am thirsty, it’s practically orgasmic. (That’s overstating it a little . . . but just a little.)

That’s an idea. I’m going to the grocery store in a bit; I’ll have to check out the calorie count on some salted, non-buttered popcorn.

As for concerns about a sodium-heavy diet, I haven’t had a checkup in almost a decade, so I’m just going to assume that that won’t be an issue. Seems like a good plan to me.

Yeah, lemon salt is exactly what it sounds like. I get it in gas stations all the time, little green packets. I used to just drink little spoonfuls of ReaLemon with some sea salt dumped in it, but I am really concerned about my teeth, so I cut it out when I was a teen. The salt is still good, though. Oh! That reminds me, my husband turned me on to cucumber slices with lime juice and salt. Red pepper flakes too if you’re into that. Sorta like pickles that haven’t pickled yet. And practically zero calories, too. Of course on edit I see you don’t like pickles, so you may dislike this as well. :smack:

If you air pop popcorn, it’s not bad, either. I’d get popcorn salt though - it’s superfine in texture. Should be available at the grocer, or I think Penzey’s sells it.

My first thought is edamame. I love cold water after some edamame. High in calories, but most of it protein- good for you.

Unfortunately your request here is going to lead to you consuming a lot of sodium, which is generally considered a bad idea.

Edit- I see that you’ve decided to solve this problem the way I solve dietary problems - by ignoring them!

Continuing on Queen Bruin’s suggestion, I’m also a big fan of cukes with rice wine vinegar and a few sesame seeds.

I think I get the OP’s fascination with cold water after eating certain things. As I think about it I feel the same way.

How about: marijuana. Very low in calories by itself…

Mmmmm…

Cigarettes…

:: drool ::

Jackson Hole Burgers in NYC had chunky slices of the best dill pickles as the finger food before the food came.

The idea of drinking water is making me faintly nauseous.

Regular pretzels aren’t bad for you and they often come with their own salt supply.

Rice cakes. With mulch spread. Low cal, high fiber, dry as a brick in the desert. What more could you ask for?

Ah, forget the food and just go with a salt-lick. You can find them at the pet store.

How about something like wasabi peas?
