i have several free sites on yahoo/geocities, such as a fraternity alumni site.
geocities is doing everything it can to piss me off so i will buy a subscription site from them. they have introduced huge pop up ads, download on their ftp sucks, they routinely shut the site down for a day or two, etc.
i have been looking at a lot of other free hosting possibilities but wondered if anyone could suggest a good one, hopefully free of pop ups.
I don’t have a free web hosted site, but everyone I know who has one ends up running into something that pisses 'em off – either the pop-up ads, or the click-through ads, or the site’s suddenly unavailable because of bandwidth, or it just disappears off the face of the earth.
I say avoid 'em like the plague; I pay $12 a month for my site, and I’ve never had any problems. And the knowledge that I have a right to complain if something goes wrong gives me peace of mind.
As the old saying goes, “you get what you pay for.”
Yep I finally paid for my ezboard so those pop-ups wouldn’t bother my visitors (I originally had my own user account but due to higher traffic I just got a paid board). The bandwidth ain’t free and it’s gotta be paid for somehow…hopefully they want YOU to.
I used this site for image hosting occasionally, I’m not too sure how reliable it is compared to Geocities…
The free is/was just a come on. There’s no such thing as a free lunch. You pay for it in the end, in your case it’s pissed-off-edness.
A quick google search found this!
sometimes register.com has a $20 special. For that you get your own name, three page website
& a redirect for a year. Thats the best I can think of. They dont always have that special. Use
that then some other website for storing files if you have a lot.
biker,
If you are interested in investing about 30 bucks, I can tell you where you can get your own Web site with 20 megs of space and a search engine with free hosting for life. I’ve had mine for over 2 years now and recommend it to everyone. They have fast servers, no pop-ups, and a great support forum.
IM me if you are interested in more info. I don’t want to step on any toes for posting links.
I have no answer, just a follow up question to add because I’m sick of my earthlink site that doesn’t let me do anything but fill out their own crappy wizard.
Does anybody know of a decent (relative term) free host that supports Frontpage 97? Yes, I know, a lot of people don’t like frontpage but I do and I’m too cheap to spend $5 a month for a host that supports it, so I’m not going to buy new design software, especially for a basic family/fun website. I’ve found a lot of them doing a search, but I’m not familiar with any of them.
Anyone know of anything out there or have some experience with any?
a friend of mine in the hosting business told me about this page describing lots of free hosting sites the one that looks the best to me is “host department.”
