Best web hosting?

:frowning: I have been wasting a lot of time trying to deal with my ISP, SBC Yahoo (formerly Pacific Bell Internet), about how my home pages disappeared. I had them over 5 years. The tech person said something about a migration of accounts and that I was supposed to have been notified by email, but I did not receive any such notification. Further, I notice that other people still have their pages up, and it is hard to believe that everyone complied with some email notice. The tech person said I could build a site through Geocities, but I notice the free one has ads. If I am going to pay for web hosting, I would like to find out opinions about the best ones. This would not be for business. Any recommendations? Oh, I plan to change ISP providers, but that is another issue. Thanks!

You can get a pretty good web site at Bravenet.com for free. If you need more Mb storage and bandwidth, the Bravenet prices are good.

Thanks for the tip. This looks good. Will check it out.

For my wife#s art site, we started out with Geocities, and upgraded to Geocities Plus about a year ago to get rid of the ads, get our own domain and more space. The advantage of Geocities is that it allows someone without any HTML knowledge to build a good-looking site (well, I think it is).

I use www.lunarpages.com . It’s cheap, loaded with features and space and bandwidth, and they have some of the best customer service in the world.

I’ve always been happy with the great prices, service, tutorials, and advice at www.hostica.com

I highly recommend them.

I’ve been using Fatcow Hosting (http://www.fatcow.com) for about a year now and can’t say enough good things about it. The plan I chose is $99 a year and includes a ton more features than I’ll ever use (shopping cart, cgi etc. . ) but I do use thier webmail interface. They have been very reliable and have a really simple “control panel” to manage your site and e-mail, much more so than most other hosing companies that I have used in the past. Oh. . . I’m not employed by them or anything, just a happy customer.

Hope this helps.

I feel better with your input. Thank you all for the suggestions. Will check them all.
And Dragon Phoenix, your wife’s site is very cool. And she is very pretty!

Thanks!

I use FutureQuest. I don’t make use of nearly all the features they provide, but I’ve had no complaints at all.

You may be able to host it yourself. OS X has a built-in Apache server, just save the site files in a specific folder, and it’s published. Couldn’t be easier. And downright luxurious sometimes when you want to post a big file. Done in two seconds. Only constraints are your HD space and bandwidth.

www.doteasy.com - $25 domain registration fee, then the hosting is free. You just pay to renew the domain every year. No ads, FTP access, blah blah blah. I use it for hosting files that may get a lot of traffic (like images for Fark) that I don’t want bogging down my own server  Been happy with it so far!
