What's the best free web-page hosting?

I tried this one about six month ago in GQ and didn’t get many responses, so I’ll give it one more shot.

I don’t expect wonderful for free, of course. But Crosswinds keeps losing my stuff, refuses to load my pages on the first try, and gives 2 or 3 pop-ups per page. Anything has to be better.

Any recommendations for free personal web-page hosting? Any places I should really, really avoid?

Have you tried Homestead?

Didn’t homestead stop being free a year or so ago?

I’ve used www.angelfire.com for a few years. Not perfect, but a lot better than your experiences with Crosswinds.

Most of them went to the payment route, its the only way to make it today.

6 months ago the same ones were not out, but if you search the net for free homepage
you should have todays list.

Wow. That’s the same thing that happens to me with crosswinds. I’ve got half my stuff back at my old previously-abandoned-but-now-partially-reclaimed geocities page and half just sitting in my computer because I can’t make up my mind whether I want to schlep everything back to geocities or go through the trouble of setting up yet another account somewhere.

Re Homestead: Their price for basic webpage service went up to $69.99 for one year! That’s right, I kid you not. There’s no way I’d pay that much money for a site I basically used for storage.

Re Geocities: I don’t know if anyone else had this experience, but I discovered that you can’t upload your pages to another site and then delete your Geocities site. I think it has something to do with lack of FTP, but I’m not sure…

I am currently using http://www.brinkster.com ,which seems reliable so far.

[fixed link-Czarcasm]

Yep, no more FTP for free. You can delete your stuff using the Geocities file manager, though.

But at Geocities you can still HTTP for free through Front Page.
No flames please.

I switched to Angelfire from Geocities, and I haven’t had any problems with it.

I wanted to thank everyone for the advice.

Thanks, Hastur, for suggesting Homestead, but as a couple people pointed out, it is a pay-service now.

Brinkster looked okay, though right now I’m leaning more towards Angelfire. I’ll keep Geocities in mind as a third possibility.

I use 1dollarhosting.com one dollar a month. Jury is still out on them. $49 setup. 30 day
money back. Not free, but has a cgi-bin.

Then I went to http://www.gkg.net & there you can register a name & have it sent to any
URL you want, for one year this is $14.99 & free email account too. No ads. Took them
less than 24 hours to setup a NEW name & url forwarding for me this week. Cool

I should have done better. Here is what to do, try: http://www.yabbforum.com/ click on ‘support’
then ‘community’ then ‘YaBB-Friendly Web Hosts’ Then you can find a list of free hosting places,
some have ads & some do not. This depends on the day but this way you get an undated list.

Hamish, don’t bother looking - I’ll put your page on the metrodemontreal.com server as soon as I get home.

I cannot reveal my excellent free, no-ads, php, cgi, multiple subdomain, ftp, multiple mySql databases server…

BUT, I will give you the biggest hint I can, and that is look outside the english speaking realm. There are plenty of online translators that will help you through the sign-up process.

Another tip is, ring your ISP. Half the time you have 20 megs storage sitting unused on their servers that came with your account.

What happens? If you tell us you have to kill us? Boy was the hint unhelpful.

I know a place where you can live rent free with all the free beer you can drink. I can’t tell you where it is but I can give you a hint. Here it is:

It’s green
